San Antonio FC (5-5-6) fell to El Paso Locomotive FC (10-1-4) 0-2 on the road on Wednesday evening. Despite winning three of their last four matches entering tonight’s contest, SAFC came up short against the Locos.
"Any time you play the best team in the conference you have to bring your A game, and we felt as a collective we underperformed today,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “We have to bring our very best, and we know we can do much better and give a lot more. We'll learn from this and we have to make sure we're better against another good team in RGV."
Despite a promising start from SAFC over the first few minutes, it was El Paso who would take the lead on a counter-attack. Diego Luna played a quick one-two and slotted the return ball from Dylan Mares past Matthew Cardone for the 1-0 home lead. El Paso would then double their lead at the stroke of halftime after and over the top pass from former SAFC forward Luis Solignac landed on the head of Jose Aguinaga who buried the opportunity to double the lead 2-0.
SAFC fought in the second half to try and find a foothold in the match but ultimately couldn’t come up with a goal. El Paso defender Bryam Rebellon came on in the 70th minute and received two yellow cards in seven minutes to get sent off, giving SAFC a boost in the final 15 minutes of the match. However, despite attempting to snag the first goal in a comeback, El Paso was able to hold on for the win and three points.
San Antonio FC will now recover for yet another quick turnaround as they travel to RGV on Sunday to face the Toros at H-E-B Park in San Antonio’s third straight road match.
