San Antonio FC (5-4-6) scored three goals to earn an impressive shutout win over rivals Austin Bold FC (5-4-5) on the road Saturday night. A fifth goal for Nathan in four matches to go with strikes from Jose Gallegos and Emil Cuello helped earn the three points.
"I'm incredibly proud of the guys,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “Austin Bold are among the league leaders in clean sheets, they're very organized, especially defensively, so to score three goals is a fantastic feeling. It's a well-earned three points, and now it's about recovery and on to our next opponent."
SAFC started on the front foot and created multiple chances in the first half hour before finding the first goal. A breakaway from Cuello forced a defender to take him down in the box, leading to the referee calling a penalty kick. Cuello calmly finished with a Paneka style penalty to give San Antonio the 1-0 lead. Austin responded well and forced some good defending out of the SAFC defense and goalkeeper Matthew Cardone who ended with five saves on the night. Ultimately, the two teams entered the break with SAFC up 1-0.
After an uneventful start to the second half, SAFC found its second opportunity when Cuello slipped Nathan through with a perfect through ball. The Brazilian rounded the keeper and was taken down by the Bold stopper leading to San Antonio’s second penalty of the night. This time, Nathan stepped up to the spot and finished in the bottom corner to double the lead. SAFC wrapped up the points on another counter attack when Nathan found Gallegos in an advanced position before the San Antonio native slotted past the keeper for the third goal of the night.
With his goal, Nathan is now tied for the team-lead with five while Gallego’s strike was his second on the season. San Antonio FC will now travel to its second match of this upcoming four-game road stretch, heading to El Paso on Wednesday, August 4.
