San Antonio FC (2-2-4) fell 0-2 on the road to New Mexico United (4-2-2) on Wednesday, suffering just the second loss of the young 2021 season. A goal either side of halftime for the hosts was enough to earn the three points.
“Games like this can only build resilience and help prepare us in the long run,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “It’s a marathon season, so we will learn. We will identify the areas we did well and where we need to improve. Our final actions on both ends of the field are areas we need to improve on, but we will get there. We will be better for it moving forward.”
New Mexico got on the board in the 33rd minute when the club captain Josh Suggs was found with a through ball by Andrew Tinari before finishing in the bottom corner. New Mexico doubled their lead in the 52nd minute after Austin Yearwood picked up a pass from a set piece, created space and finished a curling shot into the top corner.
SAFC created 10 chances and took 12 shots in the match as they looked to find a foothold for a comeback. Four SAFC players recorded at least two shots on the night with forward Justin Dhillon leading the way with three.
Following the three-game road trip, SAFC will now return home on Saturday, June 19 against RGV FC for Pride Night, presented by Methodist Healthcare. The game marks the third meeting between the South Texas rivals this season and will kick off at 7:30 p.m.
