San Antonio FC will continue the grind on Wednesday when they host OKC Energy FC at Toyota Field for the club’s fourth game in 10 days. Fresh off a trip to Oklahoma where they faced the Energy and FC Tulsa, SAFC hosted the Austin Bold this past Saturday at Toyota Field.
The number of games condensed into a small amount of time has much to do with the current climate. Due to the COVID-19 related season suspension this season, the club’s remaining 15 have come faster than usual. Despite this, SAFC continues to prepare one game at a time as they look to extend their unbeaten streak to eight matches.
“We’ve been preparing the last couple of days,” said SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone. “The games are coming thick and fast now, so we are just trying to push ahead and make sure we are physically and mentality ready for Wednesday’s game.”
SAFC faced the Energy at the beginning of this four-game stretch, earning three points on the road thanks to a 3-0 victory. After Cristian Parano opened the scoring, Callum Montgomery and Ignacio Bailone created cushion to help ease the victory in OKC. The match was the third win, and second consecutive win for San Antonio over their Oklahoma counterparts. The back-to-back wins – where SAFC outscored OKC 6-1 – come after seven of the previous nine matches had ended in a draw. Wednesday’s contest, like so many in 2020, also looks to be a tough test.
“It’s going to be a fight again,” said Cardone. “Every game in this league and in the conference is a tough match up. They are going to come in and battle – as are we — and hopefully [we can] get the three points.”
Following the match against the Energy, the Alamo City club will prepare for yet another quick turnaround, hosting FC Tulsa on Saturday on just two days’ rest. The game will complete five matches in 14 days for San Antonio before they travel to RGV FC on Aug. 28.
Despite the fixture pile up, SAFC is excited for this quick stretch at home even though Toyota Field will still host matches without fans in attendance.
“It’s always nice to play at home, you don’t have to worry about travel and things that come with that,” said Cardone. “It’s great to play in our own stadium, it’s a great surface. We miss our fans, but we are happy to play at home.”
