As San Antonio FC begins its final preparations for the 2020 USL Championship season this weekend, we take a look at some of the numbers behind SAFC since the club’s inception in 2016. This is SAFC By the Numbers.
8 – As the roster is near completion ahead of Saturday, between head coach Alen Marcina and the SAFC players, the club has won eight championships between them. From USL Championship regular season titles, to NASL Soccer Bowl championships, the roster already has a winning feel to it. A number of SAFC players have also won both high school and college championships in their careers to boot.
14 – The number of saves goalkeeper and San Antonio native Matthew Cardone has tallied in his career against the Monarchs. Should he get the start this weekend, the Trinity and MacArthur graduate would look to build on that number against the defending league champions.
15- It’s no secret that SAFC have had some tough challenges in their previous home openers, including playing the defending Western Conference champion Phoenix Rising last season. But this year, they take on the league champion Monarchs in a stern first test. SAFC has had success against the Monarchs, going 4-2-1 overall against the club including a 2-0-1 record at home. The team has scored 15 goals against SLC all-time in just seven games, averaging more than two goals per game.
34 – SAFC continues to be an extremely difficult team to beat at home, as the club has amassed 34 home wins in the regular season in just four years. This weekend, they will try to make it 35 and improve on the 34-10-21 record in the friendly confines of Toyota Field.
48 – SAFC enters a new era under Alen Marcina, but this certainly isn’t the new coach’s first rodeo. Marcina has accumulated 48 wins in all competitions as a head coach while also winning an NASL Championship in 2014, and a USL League Two regular season championship in 2018.
8,138 – Aside from the good play at home on the field, SAFC is known for the best fans in the league off the field. As expected, the fans continue to turn out in impressive numbers, none more so than during the team’s four home openers. The club has averaged an attendance of 8,138 in the first home games of each season so far.
432,909 – Another number that looks set to grow in 2020. So far since the club’s inception in 2016, San Antonio FC has welcomed 432,909 fans to Toyota Field in USL Championship regular season matches. That number will expand throughout the season, eventually hitting half a million.
