San Antonio FC lost 1-3 in their final preseason test of 2020 against league rivals RGV FC on Friday afternoon at STAR Soccer Complex. An opening goal from midfielder Hayden Partain was not enough for the home side on the day.
“I though there were a lot of positives in the game,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “I think we did a great job creating opportunities, but we need to be more ruthless and put those in the back of the net. We also found some learning opportunities on things we must clean up, like giving away three set-piece goals that came from good finishes from RGV. We thank them for making the trip to San Antonio today and we now start preparing for the Monarchs next week.”
Partain scored his goal from a strong header after forward Luis Solignac got down the right flank and put a pinpoint cross in. SAFC nearly doubled the lead a minute later when Jesus Enriquez was fouled for a penalty, but Solignac sent the spot kick over the bar.
RGV equalized with 10 minutes to go in the half, capitalizing on a free ball after a set piece. The Toros took the lead with another goal from a set piece before scoring the third from a direct free kick into the far post.
SAFC opens the USL Championship regular season next Saturday, March 7 against Real Monarchs SLC at Toyota Field.
SAFC Starting XI: GK: Matthew Cardone; D: Trialist, Connor Maloney, Blake Smith, Mitch Taintor (Sebastian Mercado*), Callum Montgomery; M: Hayden Partain (Zach Herivaux), PC, Jesus Enriquez (Ignacio Bailone); F: Jose Gallegos, Luis Solignac (Gonzalo Di Renzo)
