
San Antonio FC forward Frank Lopez was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week, the league announced today. Lopez scored two goals in his club debut in the win on July 17 at El Paso. In addition, SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone earned a Team of the Week honorable mention.
After joining on loan from LA Galaxy II on July 15, Lopez made his first start for San Antonio two days later on the road against the El Paso Locomotive. Lopez recorded a brace in the 3-1 road win – San Antonio’s first of the season. His two goals in his debut marked the first time an SAFC players has accomplished that feat since former striker Jason Johnson scored two against the Seattle Sounders 2 on April 3, 2016 – the club’s first game in team history. Additionally, Lopez recorded two shots and one key pass this past Saturday at Orange County SC.
Cardone earns an honorable mention after recording six saves over two matches at El Paso and Orange County SC last week, respectively. The San Antonio native conceded just one goal over the two games, earning his sixth clean sheet and helping SAFC collect four valuable road points. Cardone currently ranks second in the USL Championship in saves, making 59 so far this season.
