San Antonio FC (3-7-3) fell 1-2 to Sacramento Republic (5-5-2) on Saturday night. A late goal from midfielder Michael Lahoud and a standout performance from goalkeeper Matthew Cardone were not enough to salvage points on the road for the Alamo City club.
“It was a hard-fought contest that came down to the last 15 minutes tonight,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Our team worked extremely hard to put ourselves in a good position and try to keep the clean sheet. We pulled one back but it was too little, too late, but we’re proud of the players for their commitment and discipline to try and do the right thing.”
Sacramento opened the scoring late in the match after a mistake in the back led to an own goal by SAFC in the 78th minute. The hosts then added a second on the night after midfielder Sam Werner curled a shot back-post from the top of the box to make it 0-2.
San Antonio FC cut the deficit in the 90th minute after midfielder Michael Lahoud buried a shot from the top of the box following a corner kick. The goal marked Lahoud’s first for the club since joining prior to the 2019 season, while the assist marked midfielder Walter Restrepo’s second of the campaign.
SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone recorded six saves on the night, matching his season-high tally for the club. The San Antonio native has now recorded 38 saves on the season in 1,080 minutes played.
San Antonio FC will return to USL Championship action at home on Saturday, June 8 at 7:30 p.m. as they host Reno 1868 FC at Toyota Field during Military Appreciation Night, presented by Toyota.
