San Antonio FC (10-9-7) will travel to face Real Monarchs SLC (17-7-2) at Zions Bank Stadium on Monday, Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. CT. The match marks the second between the two teams in 2018 as SAFC looks to complete a season sweep after beating the club at home in July.
SAFC will look to build on their momentum after earning a 3-1 comeback win at RGV FC on Wednesday with a strong second-half performance despite going down a goal in the opening minutes of the match. The club is currently in ninth place in the standings and within three points of eighth-place Saint Louis FC and seventh-place Swope Park Rangers.
The Monarchs will look to bounce back into winning form at home after falling 0-1 at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC. The club is currently in first place in the Western Conference standings and remains unbeaten at home, however SAFC will strive to build on its momentum to hand the club its first loss at Zions Bank Stadium.
“Every game that we play in this league is very competitive regardless of the opposition,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We don’t see Monday being any different and what has happened previously doesn’t have a bearing on our upcoming match, so we’ll continue to make sure we’re focused and continue to improve on what we’ve been doing.”
The two clubs most recently faced each other on July 21 in a match where SAFC earned its biggest win of the season with a 4-2 victory at Toyota Field over the Utah club. Last season, SAFC earned a draw at home against Real Monarchs in their first matchup of the campaign before earning a dramatic 2-1 comeback win on the road.
SAFC will rely on the trio of Ever Guzman, Omar Gordon, and new-loanee Lance Laing in the attack. Guzman now leads the team in goals after scoring his sixth of the season at RGV, while Gordon trails by just one while consistently creating chances up front for the team. Meanwhile, Laing scored his first club goal and recorded his first assist in his first start for SAFC on Wednesday. For SAFC, building on their recent performances will be key as they continue their push for a playoff position.
“We’re very pleased with our performances in the last three halves we’ve played,” Powell said. “Our goal now as a group is to build on that and make improvements all over the field on both ends of the ball, and as long as we do that we will continue to get better and look to keep earning points.”
Following their match in Utah, SAFC will return home as they host Phoenix Rising FC at Toyota Field on Saturday, Sept. 8 as the club celebrates ‘Our Future’ Night presented by Cheerios.
