– San Antonio FC (10-9-7) beat Rio Grande Valley FC (4-10-12) 3-1 at H-E-B Park on Wednesday night. Goals from Connor Presley, Lance Laing, and Ever Guzman earned the Alamo City club three points on the road in the South Texas Derby.
“Earning points on the road takes a full team effort,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We went a goal down early and the response from the team was very good. We came out in the second half and showed determination and desire to get back into the game, and we’re extremely proud of their application tonight.”
RGV FC opened the scoring three minutes into the match after a turnover just outside the SAFC box resulted in a goal from Jesus Enriquez, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead that would last through halftime.
The Alamo City club then found the equalizer in the 50th minute after Presley finished off a cross from Laing inside the hosts’ box. The goal marks Presley’s first professional goal since joining the club in August 2017.
SAFC gained the lead just 12 minutes later when a quality buildup concluded with the ball at Lang’s feet following a pass from midfielder Mikey Lopez. The Jamaican curled the ball past goalkeeper Nicolas Corti to score his first club goal in his first start and second appearance with the team, with the assist marking Lopez’s third this season.
The Alamo City club extended its lead in the 80th minute after midfielder Sonny Guadarrama found Guzman in on goal with a through-ball. The Mexico native finished his team-leading sixth goal with a lofted ball on the first-touch to make it 3-1.
The win marks the team’s first after losing their previous four matches. SAFC is 1-0-1 this season when playing in a South Texas Derby and 2-0-1 when playing at H-E-B Park.
SAFC will return to USL action on Monday, Aug. 3 at 8:00 p.m. CT as they visit league-leaders Real Monarchs SLC at Rio Tinto Stadium.
