San Antonio FC (9-6-7) fell 2-3 to Seattle Sounders FC 2 (5-14-2) at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night. A goal from forward Ever Guzman and a stellar performance from goalkeeper Diego Restrepo were not enough to salvage the Alamo City club any points on the road.
“Tonight, wasn’t one of our strongest performances, so we need to regroup,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We’ll look at certain aspects on both sides of the ball and improve that as we head into Wednesday’s game.”
The Sounders opened the scoring just five minutes into the match when midfielder Henry Wingo found space on the dribble and slotted the ball past Restrepo for the 1-0 lead. The hosts then accidentally leveled the score 1-1 after midfielder Jesse Daley scored an own goal while attempting to pass the ball back to goalkeeper Bryan Meredith.
SAFC then took the lead in the 24th minute after Guzman tapped in a rebound that bounced off the post from a header from teammate Stephen McCarthy following a set piece, but the Sounders found an equalizer yet again just before the halftime break after Wingo scored his second of the night from inside the SAFC box.
The goal marks Guzman’s fourth in as many appearances and fifth for the club this season, making him the leading scorer for the Alamo City club so far in 2018. Guzman now sits on nine goals overall for the club in USL regular season play, just two behind all-time leader Rafa Castillo.
The Sounders found the winning goal in the 68th minute after midfielder Shandon Hopeau ripped a shot from long distance past Restrepo to make it 3-2 in favor of the hosts.
Despite the result, Restrepo tallied seven saves on the night, marking his second-highest tally since joining the club prior to the 2017 season. Restrepo currently holds the club all-time saves record in a single match (nine) along with teammate Matthew Cardone.
San Antonio FC will return to USL action on Wednesday, August 15 as they visit Portland Timbers FC 2 at Providence Park at 9:30 p.m. CT.
