San Antonio FC (5-4-7) will travel to face Orange County SC (9-6-3) at Champions Stadium on Saturday, July 14 at 9 p.m. CT. The Alamo City club will look to build on a two-match unbeaten streak.
SAFC heads into the match after earning its first win in an international exhibition match against Liga MX champion Santos Laguna last Sunday. Prior to that, SAFC recorded two 1-1 draws in league play against Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC and OKC Energy FC.
Orange County will look to get back into winning form after falling 0-3 against in-state rivals LA Galaxy II. The club has only lost two matches at home so far this season, however five of their six total losses have come when the team is limited to one goal or fewer. For SAFC, defensive composure will be key as they face a side that has scored 29 goals this season.
“Our mentality doesn’t change,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We’re always ready to go and we want to make sure we set ourselves up to be sound defensively so we can find ways to exploit the opposition. That’s what we’ve worked on this week, and it’s been good to spend the past couple of days preparing for this game.”
The last time SAFC visited Orange County SC, the club secured its first-ever USL Playoffs berth with a 1-0 win. In the two San Antonio FC wins against OCSC, the winning goal has been scored by the SAFC right-backs, Milton Palacios in 2016 and Ben Newnam in 2017. Current SAFC right-back Darnell King has yet to find the back of the net this season, however the Florida native leads the club with four assists.
San Antonio FC most recently faced OCSC at Toyota Field on April 14, falling 0-3 to the California club, however the team is focused on their own playing style as they head into the away leg this weekend.
“We’re just focusing on us and playing the way we like to play,” SAFC defender Gianluca Cuomo said. “We want to keep the ball, hold possession with a purpose, get our players in the attack, and as always we’ll strive to keep the clean sheet.”
