San Antonio FC (5-4-7) tied OKC Energy FC (5-10-2) 1-1 at Toyota Field on Wednesday night. A stunning equalizer from Alex Bruce earned the Alamo City club at point at home. The match marks the sixth draw between the two teams in seven USL regular season matches.
“When you go down a goal, you have to show that character and resilience to get back into the game,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “I thought the guys showed that tonight with the way they fought to get the tying goal, and I thought we started to get on the front foot a little bit.”
OKC Energy FC opened the scoring in the second half when midfielder Jose Barril beat goalkeeper Matt Cardone with a one-touch volley inside the box for the 1-0 lead.
SAFC forward Alex Bruce then found the equalizer in the 77th minute after collecting the ball in the attacking third of the field. The England native took a shot from long distance and placed it far-post to beat goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel to level the score 1-1.
The goal marks Bruce’s third of the season in eight appearances for the club. The 19-year-old is now tied with midfielder Omar Gordon as the club’s leading scorer so far in the 2018 USL season.
SAFC goalkeeper and San Antonio native Matt Cardone made his first USL appearance for the club since suffering an injury at Vancouver Whitecaps FC in April of last season. The goalkeeper tallied three saves and one cross claimed on the night.
San Antonio FC will return to action on Sunday, July 8 as they host Liga MX champions Santos Laguna at Toyota Field in an international exhibition match. The game will mark the second time the two clubs meet after they played to a 1-1 draw before Santos won on penalties in 2017.
