San Antonio FC (5-3-5) beat Sacramento Republic FC (8-4-4) 1-0 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. A goal from Cesar Elizondo and quality defensive and goalkeeping performances earned the Alamo City club three points at home.
“You can’t be prouder of our players,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We kept the clean sheet and made sure we kept the lead, and got a goal at a really good time in the game to get into halftime in a good position.”
SAFC scored the lone goal of the match in the 43rd minute of the match after midfielder Ethan Bryant played a long ball to forward Cesar Elizondo to send him one-on-one against goalkeeper Josh Cohen. Elizondo slotted the ball far-post to beat the keeper and earn the 1-0 lead.
The goal marks the Costa Rica native’s first this season and ninth overall in all competitions since joining the club midway through the 2016 season. The assist marked Bryant’s first for the club in his USL debut.
San Antonio FC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo earned SWBC Man of the Match honors after recording nine saves and two claims to record his fourth clean sheet of the season. The Venezuela native’s nine saves match the club’s all-time record for saves in a single match, which was set by Alamo City native Matthew Cardone on July 30, 2016 at Swope Park Rangers.
Defender Cyprian Hedrick made his first start since October 11, 2017, recording a team-high 13 clearances, five blocks, and six possessions gained, while also tallying an 89 percent passing accuracy and one chance created in the attack.
Midfielder Charlie Ward made his debut for SAFC following halftime, playing 45 minutes and recording an 85 percent passing accuracy.
The win marks the second consecutive victory for SAFC and fourth consecutive unbeaten run in USL play. San Antonio FC will return to action on Saturday, June 23 as they host Reno 1868 FC at Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
