San Antonio FC has signed midfielder Charlie Ward for the 2018 USL season pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Ward joins San Antonio FC after spending parts of the last three seasons with RGV FC and the Houston Dynamo. The English native joined RGV prior to the 2016 season and started in all 30 matches for the club, leading the Toros to a second-place finish in the USL Western Conference and the club’s first-ever playoff berth. Ward led the USL in minutes (2,700) after playing in every regular season minute for RGV FC during the 2016 season, and also added three assists. The midfielder then appeared in 12 matches for RGV in 2017, playing in 975 minutes before signing with the Houston Dynamo full-time in July of 2017.
“We are pleased to add Charlie to our squad,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He is a capable midfielder that passes the ball well. We look forward to working with him.”
Ward spent parts of both the 2017 and 2018 seasons with the Dynamo and appeared in one match in 2017, playing 45 minutes in the second half. Ward also started two of Houston’s Open Cup matches in 2017, tallying 210 minutes total. Originally from Redditch, England, the 23-year-old spent time in the youth academies of Aston Villa and Stoke City prior to making his move to the United States to join RGV FC.
“This opportunity means a lot,” said Ward. “I’m happy to be here and I’m excited. The staff has been great to me and I’m excited to get going and help this team get into the playoffs, and we’re hoping to win.”
With the addition of Ward, the SAFC roster currently stands at 26. Ward will wear No. 22 for the club.
San Antonio FC will host Sacramento Republic FC on June 16 followed by Reno 1868 FC on June 23 at Toyota Field.
