San Antonio FC has signed forward Kyle Murphy, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Murphy joins San Antonio after previously spending the last two seasons with rivals RGV FC. In 2017, Murphy led the Toros in goals, scoring seven and collecting three assists in 31 appearances (1,780 minutes). The forward also recorded 44 shots, 21 on target, and created 16 chances over the course of the season, which included 11 starts. Murphy was also included in the Houston Dynamo (MLS) squad for their U.S. Open Cup match on June 14, 2017 after he was called up from RGV FC.
“Kyle is player the coaching staff has identified over the last couple of years who has been a threat on the attacking side of the ball against us with RGV,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Now we are very pleased to sign him. He was looking for a club in the offseason, came into training a couple of weeks ago and impressed us, so we are looking forward to him coming in and competing for minutes straight away.”
Murphy originally joined the Toros at the beginning of the 2016 USL season. Overall in his two seasons with RGV, the New York native has appeared in 56 USL matches, making 32 starts and playing 2,928 total minutes while adding 10 goals and four assists. Prior to his professional career, Murphy played four seasons of collegiate soccer at Clemson, scoring 10 goals in 60 games and helping lead Clemson to the 2015 Men’s Soccer National Championship where they fell to Stanford.
“I’m very excited to get here and play for one of the best clubs in the USL with great fans,” said Murphy. “It’s always been fun coming here and playing in a great atmosphere. The guys are great and I am ready to get going.”
With the addition of Murphy, the SAFC roster currently stands at 25. Murphy will wear No. 17 for the club.
San Antonio FC is currently preparing for the first edition of the South Texas Derby in 2018, which kicks off on May 12 in RGV against the Toros. San Antonio will then travel to Midland for the second round of the U.S. Open Cup before returning to Toyota Field on Military Appreciation Night on May 19.
