San Antonio FC played to a 0-0 draw with South Texas rivals RGV FC at Toyota Field Friday night. The game marks the second to final preseason match for SAFC as they prepare for the 2018 USL season.
“I thought tonight we saw some good ideas from our players,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “We played it like we would a regular season game and I thought the application was good, but now we have to tidy up things on both sides of the ball. The bottom line for us is that we want to make sure we’re efficient.”
Despite the 0-0 scoreline, both SAFC and RGV FC created multiple chances in the match. The home side forced two key blocks in the first half to keep the score level, while both Ever Guzman and Sonny Guadarrama came close to scoring with the latter having his header cleared off the line in the second half. The San Antonio defense kept its second clean sheet of the preseason with all SAFC defenders appearing with the exception of Stephen McCarthy.
The club will face the Tulsa Roughnecks in the team’s final preseason match this year next Saturday, March 10 at 1 p.m. in a closed-door friendly at Toyota Field. San Antonio FC opens its season the following week in Sacramento, taking on Republic FC on March 17.
