The top two teams in the USL Western Conference will face off this weekend as San Antonio FC (12-2-9) travels to Salt Lake City to play league-leaders Real Monarchs (17-3-4). The match will mark the second and final time that the two teams clash in the regular season after they tied at Toyota Field on July 22.
San Antonio FC will aim to earn their second consecutive win after earning three points at home against Whitecaps FC 2 on August 23 thanks to a stunning goal by midfielder Kris Tyrpak. After the team’s match last Saturday was rescheduled due to severe weather across Texas, SAFC heads into the weekend after nine days of rest.
Despite leading second-place SAFC by 10 points, Real Monarchs will look for a win at home to seal their spot in the USL playoffs. The Monarchs host the Alamo City club after earning a 2-1 win against fellow Texas club RGV FC. Like San Antonio FC, Real Monarchs has yet to record a loss at home this season, winning 11 matches and drawing one at Rio Tinto Stadium.
The last time the two clubs met resulted in a draw in San Antonio after goals from Devin Vega and Kris Tyrpak, as well as Chandler Hoffman and Max Lachowecki, earned both teams a point despite SAFC outshooting Real Monarchs 12-4, winning 66.7 percent of duels and recording 54 percent possession.
The Silver and Black’s defensive play will be key in Saturday’s match as they visit one of the biggest attacking threats in the league. SAFC continues to lead the league in clean sheets (13), 10 of which have been recorded by Diego Restrepo, who continues to lead the race for the USL Golden Glove as he closes in on the USL all-time single season record of 13 clean sheets, which was set by Brandon Miller with the Rochester Rhinos in 2015.
Overall, SAFC has conceded the fewest goals in the league, allowing just 13 goals in 23 matches played and averaging 0.6 goals allowed per game. On the other hand, however, Real Monarchs rank second in the league for most goals scored (50), averaging 2.08 goals per match and leading the league with a 22 percent conversion rate.
Saturday’s clash between the top two teams in the West marks the first of four consecutive away matches for San Antonio FC. The club will then visit LA Galaxy II, Orange County SC, and Swope Park Rangers before returning to action at Toyota Field on September 23.
