San Antonio FC (12-2-9) earned a 1-0 win against Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (4-13-7) at Toyota Field on Wednesday night. A goal from Kris Tyrpak was enough to clinch the hosts three points at home in front of 6,037 fans.
“We’ve been probing and trying different things, and the guys who came in tonight did a wonderful job,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “The good thing tonight was that we created several opportunities. You just want to maintain your focus and this is one of the times where you hope you can hit the back of the net on a more regular basis.”
Tyrpak scored the lone goal of the match in the 14th minute when defender Greg Cochrane sent in a cross from the left flank, which Tyrpak headed across the mouth of the goal from about 16 yards out and past goalkeeper Sean Melvin for the 1-0 lead.
The goal marked Tyrpak’s sixth of the season, putting him just one goal short of tying Billy Forbes’ current single-season lead in goals scored for the club. Cochrane recorded his third assist of the season and is now tied for second-most this season along with Tyrpak and Cesar Elizondo.
SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo earned his tenth clean sheet of the season, marking the 13th overall for the team. With the shutout, Restrepo is now just three clean sheets short of the USL single-season shutout record, which was set by Brandon Miller in 2015 with the Rochester Rhinos.
San Antonio FC midfielder Connor Presley and forward Mike Seth made their club debuts after both signed for the club on August 10, while midfielder Ryan Roushandel made his second USL start of the season and completed 82 percent of his 47 total passes.
SAFC will return to action in just three days as they host Portland Timbers 2 at Toyota Field on Saturday, August 26 at 7:30 p.m.
