San Antonio FC today announced that Juan Lamadrid has been named its Goalkeeping Director. Lamadrid currently serves as an assistant coach for the San Antonio FC first team, and his duties will expand to overseeing goalkeeping for all levels of the club as well as a head coach in the SAFC Pro Academy, competing in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.
In his new role as Goalkeeping Director, the 46-year-old will oversee all goalkeepers and goalkeeper training in a full-time capacity for the San Antonio first team down through each level of the SAFC Pro Academy. He will also continue in his role as first team assistant coach.
“We are very pleased to have Juan join us in a full time technical role,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He has been an excellent member of our staff over the past 16 months and is fully deserving of his expanded role. He brings goalkeeping expertise to the whole club from the first team to our U12’s in our integrated model. He will also work alongside Nick in our ever-expanding Pro Academy.”
Lamadrid originally joined the club in February of 2016 prior to the start of San Antonio’s inaugural season in the USL. The Mexico native has been a staple in the San Antonio soccer community for many years, serving on the now-defunct San Antonio Scorpions staff since their inception in 2011 to their final season in 2015. During his time in San Antonio professional soccer, Lamadrid worked with MLS veteran Josh Saunders as well as United States National Team goalkeeper David Bingham. Also, Lamadrid most recently worked as a coach for Classics Elite soccer club in San Antonio.
Lamadrid was also the goalkeeper coach for Trinity University and has worked with multiple All-American keepers during his tenure there, including current SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone who he helped develop at both Trinity and with the Scorpions. Lamadrid played professionally in Mexico for 12 seasons including with historic Liga MX club Chivas de Guadalajara, and currently holds a USSF B License.
“It’s an honor to be named the Goalkeeping Director for the club and head coach in the SAFC Pro Academy,” said Lamadrid. “It’s a pleasure to be involved with the first team already, and I look forward to coaching the younger players in the SAFC Pro Academy as well as we continue to develop players in the San Antonio area.”
