San Antonio FC (9-0-2) will host Swope Park Rangers (4-4-0) on Saturday, June 3 at Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m. The match will be the second consecutive time the two clubs face each other this season and the second of three total encounters between the two in the USL regular season.
Coverage of the match will be available on www.sanantoniofc.com and the USL Match Center.
San Antonio FC remains the only unbeaten club in the entire USL, and has now gone undefeated in 11 consecutive league matches this season, matching the 1996 LA Galaxy team for the best professional start to a season in American soccer history with 29 points.
Swope Park Rangers will aim to get back in form after recording two consecutive losses. The club is now in eighth place in the standings with 12 points, and recorded their first-ever loss to San Antonio FC last Friday after a goal from Mark O’Ojong earned the Silver and Black three points on the road. SAFC earned the victory even with the Rangers holding a significant advantage in possession (77-23 percent).
However, despite the common perception that clubs who win the possession battle have a better chance of winning matches, the majority of results across the USL so far this season have proven otherwise.
Entering this weekend’s matches, 113 USL games have been played where a winner has been determined so far this season. 62 percent of those matches (70 games) have seen the winning team hold less possession than their opponents. Of those 70 matches, 29 of them (41.4 percent) also saw the winning team score three goals.
Furthermore, SAFC has won nine of their first 11 matches despite being out-possessed in their wins, including last week’s match last week against Swope Park. Of those nine matches, the Alamo City club has won by multiple goals three times and scored at least three goals on four separate occasions.
The match will also mark the first time that Swope Park Rangers will visit Toyota Field since San Antonio’s inaugural home opener on April 9, 2016, which ended in a 1-1 draw in front of a sold-out crowd after a goal from Daniel Salloi and one from Danny Garcia.
