San Antonio FC earned a 4-0 win over Portland Timbers FC 2 on Friday at Providence Park. Goals from Billy Forbes and Zachary Herivaux along with a brace from Cesar Elizondo clinched a win to continue the club’s unbeaten start to 2017.
“To come away from home and earn nine points is huge,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Every point is very precious in this league, so it’s been a very valuable week. The players’ professionalism over the course of the week and preparation has been first class.”
San Antonio FC opened the scoring in the 20th minute when midfielder Billy Forbes dribbled the ball to the right side of the box, cut inside, and buried a shot far-post for the 1-0 lead. The goal was Forbes’ sixth of the season, setting a new club record for most individual goals in a single season. Forbes’ six goals and four assists are now tied for most in the USL.
The Silver and Black added to their lead in the 34th minute when forward Cesar Elizondo capitalized on a poor clearance and volleyed the ball past goalkeeper Wade Hamilton to earn the 2-0 lead.
San Antonio FC secured the win late in the dying moments of the match when Zachary Herivaux and Elizondo scored near back-to-back goals in stoppage time. Herviaux’s goal marked his first for the club since joining earlier this month on loan from the New England Revolution, while Elizondo extended his goal count this season to four, ranking second in the team in goals scored.
“I feel great for the team,” said Elizondo. “We’ve been on the road this whole week and it has brought us closer together, and I think that’s very important. Now we go home, we go happy and we go proud as well.”
SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo recorded his first clean sheet of the season. The Venezuela native was forced to make just one save on the night, which marked his third appearance for the Alamo City club.
The match set a new record for longest winning streak in franchise history. SAFC previously recorded three-game winning streaks on two occasions in 2016. In addition, the club tied its record for the largest win in club history after achieving the same scoreline earlier this season on April 15 vs Reno 1868 FC.
San Antonio FC has now earned nine points in the past seven days, concluding its three-match road trip through the Pacific Northwest and extending its unbeaten record to seven matches. SAFC will return to action on Saturday, May 6 at Toyota Field as it hosts Sacramento Republic FC for the first time in franchise history.
