San Antonio FC earned a 3-2 win against Seattle Sounders FC 2 on Tuesday to remain undefeated in 2017. Goals from AJ Ajeakwa, Billy Forbes, and Devin Vega were enough to earn the Alamo City club a win at Starfire Stadium.
“Tonight was a very difficult game,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Seattle asked a lot of us defensively, but our guys hung in there and fought hard. We rested a few guys, but earning three points in this league is extremely valuable.”
San Antonio FC opened the scoring in the 13th minute when defender Ben Newnam found a rebound on the right side of the box and passed it square for Ajeakwa, who tapped the ball into the back of an open net. The goal was Ajeakwa’s first for the club in his second start for SAFC.
Midfielder Billy Forbes added a second in the 24th minute after Ajeakwa found him in on goal with a headed flick. Forbes collected the ball and slotted it past goalkeeper Tyler Miller to extend the visitors’ lead 2-0. The goal marked the Turks and Caicos native’s fifth of the season, which ties the all-time individual season-high for goals in SAFC history.
Seattle then narrowed the gap in the 55th minute when Samuel Rogers buried a half-volley from point-blank range.
SAFC midfielder Devin Vega widened the gap yet again in the 69th minute when he took the ball in the final third and dribbled past a defender and in on goal, slotting the ball far-post for the 3-1 lead. The goal marked the San Antonio native’s first professional goal since signing his first pro contract with the club this past offseason.
“It was an amazing feeling,” said Vega. “First and foremost I’m glad we got the three points, but to get on the scoresheet is a great feeling.”
The Sounders scored again in the 75th minute with a converted penalty by Zach Mathers, but were unable to find the equalizer. The match marked the first time that SAFC has conceded more than one goal in a game this season.
San Antonio FC defender Ryan Roushandel made his first start of the season during the match, while midfielders Juan Niño and Zachary Herivaux recorded their first start and appearance for the Alamo City club.
SAFC will return to action on Friday, April 28 as it concludes its three-match road trip against Portland Timbers 2.
