San Antonio FC (3-0-1) will face Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (2-1-1) on Saturday, April 22 at 5 p.m. at Thunderbird Stadium. The match will be the first of three in a seven-day span for the Alamo City club, and the first time the teams have faced each other in Canada.
Coverage of the match will be available at www.sanantoniofc.com and the USL Match Center.
San Antonio FC will look to remain undefeated as they open their three-game road trip in Vancouver. SAFC heads into the match after earning their biggest win in club history last Saturday when they beat Reno 1868 FC 4-0 at Toyota Field. The team has now scored nine goals and conceded just one in four matches played.
“Road games are hard, and three games in seven days is super hard,” SAFC defender Stephen McCarthy said. “We have to come with the mentality that although these games may not go the way we want, we have to be ready to win. It’s going to be difficult but staying focused and staying together will be the only way to win these games.”
Whitecaps FC 2 will return home after earning a 1-0 win on the road against Portland Timbers 2 thanks to a late goal from Thomas Sanner, whose two goals currently rank first on the team. Overall, the Whitecaps have scored five goals and conceded three. The club currently sits in sixth place in the Western Conference standings.
SAFC will aim to stay at the top of the table with a win in Vancouver. The club continues to lead the league in conversion rate (33 percent), and their three shutouts are tied for most clean sheets in the USL. The club’s +8 goal differential is also the largest in the league, while their nine goals are tied for second-most in the USL.
“Experience is huge,” McCarthy said. “We have a lot of experienced players and when you’ve come from different leagues and backgrounds and played a lot of games, it really helps.”
The match will mark the second time the two clubs meet and the first since last season. Last season, San Antonio FC earned a 2-0 win over the Whitecaps at Toyota Field last July. Following Saturday’s match, San Antonio will travel to face Seattle Sounders 2 and Portland Timbers 2.
