San Antonio FC drew Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC 1-1 at Toyota Field on Friday in front of 6,217 fans. A late equalizer from midfielder Kris Tyrpak was enough to ensure the Alamo City club remained undefeated thus far in the 2017 season.
“I thought the guys showed great character to pull us back into the game,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We were down 0-1 against a team that was very well organized. I was impressed by the way they set themselves up, but full credit to our guys.”
The Switchbacks opened the scoring in the 12th minute when a mistake by the SAFC backline resulted in a quick counter from the visitors. Forward Aaron King then slipped a shot past goalkeeper Matt Cardone for the 1-0 lead.
SAFC midfielder Kris Tyrpak leveled the score in the 79th minute when Shawn Chin switched the field from the right flank, which Tyrpak collected off the chest and volleyed past Switchbacks keeper Dan Jackson to even the score 1-1.
“We dominated the second half for sure,” Tyrpak said. “We had multiple opportunities to put the game away and it just shows the resilience that we have as a team. Hopefully we can continue that throughout the season.”
The match marked a milestone for two San Antonio natives on the roster. Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez made his first start for the club, while 18-year-old Devin Vega made his professional debut after coming onto the pitch off the bench. SAFC forward Aly Hassan also made his club debut after coming off the bench in the 83rd minute.
San Antonio FC will return to action on Saturday, April 15 when they host USL newcomer Reno 1868 FC at Toyota Field.
