San Antonio FC defender Sebastien Ibeagha has been named to the USL Team of the Week, the league announced today. Ibeagha played a pivotal role in the club’s clean sheet and 1-0 win over rivals RGV FC on the road on opening weekend.
Ibeagha recorded 10 total clearances and won two aerial duels while completing 70% of his passes in the victory on Sunday. The 25-year-old and his defensive teammates helped keep RGV off the scoresheet, recording the club’s first shutout since September of last season when SAFC defeated Tulsa Roughnecks FC 2-0.
Ibeagha joined SAFC from the Houston Dynamo (MLS) prior to the start of the season. Over the course of the 2016 campaign, Ibeagha spent time on loan to RGV FC (USL) and Rayo OKC (NASL) where he appeared in 24 total matches between the two clubs, scoring two goals in 2,013 minutes played. After joining Rayo OKC in July, Ibeagha helped lead the club to the 2016 NASL Playoffs, following a fourth-place league finish.
San Antonio FC players earned Team of the Week honors 10 times last season, including midfielder Rafa Castillo who was the only SAFC player to earn it more than once. The club also had 10 members on the Team of the Week Bench throughout last season.
