San Antonio FC has signed forward Akwafei Ajeakwa for the 2017 USL season pending USL and federation approval, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Ajeakwa joins San Antonio FC from OC Blues FC (USL) where he spent the 2016 season. In 24 overall regular season appearances with the Blues, Ajeakwa made nine starts and tallied 1,143 total minutes, scoring one goal and recording two assists. The forward’s lone USL goal was named the top headed finish by the league following the conclusion of the 2016 campaign.
The 24-year-old helped OC Blues FC earn the eighth and final playoff spot in the USL Western Conference last season, leading to an upset win over Sacramento Republic FC in the first round. Ajeakwa started both playoff matches for the Blues, recording 205 minutes and three shots.
“We are pleased AJ [Ajeakwa] has come to join us in San Antonio in 2017,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He brings a lot of enthusiasm and commitment to the game and will be an attacking option for us this coming year.”
Ajeakwa spent time playing overseas prior to joining OC Blues FC at the start of the 2016 season. The California native played two years of collegiate soccer while attending Chico State University from 2012-14 where he earned All-CCAA Second Team honors and was named the Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2012. Prior to his time at Chico State, Ajeakwa played two collegiate seasons at LA Harbor College.
“I’m happy that I am joining a club where the culture of football is well respected, the organization is one of sports’ best and the community support is amazing,” said Ajeakwa. “I want to help bring success to San Antonio and build on my development as a player. I’m here to work hard, dedicate myself to the team and community, and to win.”
Ajeakwa also spent time with the Ventura County Fusion (PDL) in 2015. Ajeakwa joins Kris Tyrpak and Cyprian Hedrick as new faces on the San Antonio FC roster this season in addition to the eight returning players from last year.
San Antonio FC is currently prepping for its second season in the USL, which is scheduled to kick off in the spring. Fans interested in season tickets can contact the SAFC sales office at 210-444-5MLS or visit www.sanantoniofc.com
