San Antonio FC beat Tulsa Roughnecks FC 2-1 at ONEOK Field thanks to goals from Michael Reed and Franck Tayou on Sunday. The team has now earned three consecutive wins for the first time in franchise history.
“Tulsa made it very hard for us to break them down,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Fortunately we scored off a set piece early in the second half, and Franck (Tayou) showed a good bit of improvisation to score his goal. I thought it was a very professional and very thorough performance. We are glad to take three points on the road.”
The first half of the match remained scoreless after SAFC dominated possession of the ball. Both teams created a handful of chances in the attack, but neither goalkeeper was forced to save a dangerous opportunity.
The first goal of the match came in the 56th minute when Reed capitalized off of a Rafa Castillo free kick and headed the ball into the back of the net, earning his second goal in as many matches. The midfielder nearly doubled his tally in the 72nd minute, but was unlucky finishing the chance.
“I took a chance knowing that Rafa always delivers good balls from set pieces,” said Reed. “I took a chance and went for it, and it paid off. Right place, right time.”
SAFC doubled the lead in the 80th minute when Franck Tayou buried a chance from inside the box following a through-ball from midfielder Carlos Alvarez, earning his second goal in three appearances for the club since his debut on June 18.
The Roughnecks managed to narrow the gap in the 90th minute when a shot by Matt LaGrassia deflected off SAFC defender Stephen McCarthy into the post and found Jasson Ramios Carpio’s feet for a tap-in.
San Antonio FC has now scored eight goals in their last four matches, and earned three crucial points on the road before returning home for three consecutive matches. The team will face Oklahoma City Energy FC at Toyota Field on June 9.
