San Antonio FC will face the Houston Dynamo (MLS) on Wednesday, June 15 at 7:15 p.m. in the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The historic match for the Alamo City club will be the first time the two Texas clubs meet and the first SAFC competitive match against an MLS side.
San Antonio will head into the match after earning a point on the road against Portland Timbers 2 in USL action thanks to a late goal from defender Milton Palacios. The goal was the first in league play for SAFC since May 15, and marked the sixth goal scored by the club in the last 15 minutes of a USL match this season. The draw was impressive for San Antonio who were facing a Portland team with eight of their starting 11 being under contract with the Timbers (MLS).
The Dynamo have not played a match since they faced FC Dallas on June 2 in league play, where the team secured a draw away from home. The club will face San Antonio without leading-scorer Giles Barnes, who represented Jamaica in the Copa America Centenario.
The match will be Houston’s first in the U.S. Open Cup this year. San Antonio FC progressed to the fourth round after beating Corinthians FC SA (NPSL) 3-1 in the second round, and the Des Moines Menace (PDL) 2-1 in the third round.
SAFC forward Jacques Francois leads the team in Open Cup play with three goals and one assist. The Haitian has recorded 180 minutes of play in two appearances in the tournament.
San Antonio FC is currently in 13th place on the USL standings, while the Dynamo sits in last place on the MLS Western Conference table.
