SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC has signed veteran Major League Soccer (MLS) goalkeeper Josh Ford for the upcoming 2016 USL season, the club announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Ford spent four seasons with the Seattle Sounders (MLS) before being selected by Orlando City SC (MLS) in the 2014 MLS Re-Entry Draft. Last season, Ford spent time on loan to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (NASL) where he made 16 starts between the sticks.
“I had the opportunity to watch Josh train on a daily basis in Orlando,” said San Antonio FC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He is an exceptionally talented goalkeeper, a good shot stopper and can organize the defense well from the back. We expect him to transition well to San Antonio.”
The 28-year-old began his career playing for the Rhode Island Stingrays (PDL) after spending four years at the University of Connecticut where he was named the 2010 Big East Goalkeeper of the Year. Ford has also played in the USL in 2014 when he joined the Orange County Blues on-loan from Seattle, making two appearances and seven saves.
“I am really excited to be a member of SAFC,” said Ford. “With all of the players that are being announced, it shows we are looking to be a top contender in the league. The club has big expectations and aspirations, which a lot of players want to be a part of, including myself. We have a lot to prove in the first season, but with the staff, the players and help from the fans, we are headed in the right direction.”
Ford now joins San Antonio native Matt Cardone in the SAFC goalkeeper ranks.
San Antonio FC will make its debut in front of home supporters at Toyota Field on Saturday, April 9 against Swope Park Rangers, the USL affiliate of Sporting Kansas City.
Fans interested in being a part of the inaugural season can place their deposit for 2016 season tickets online at USLSanAntonio.com or by calling 210-444-5MLS. Individual tickets will go on sale Wednesday, March 9.
