Toyota Field will host a Tecate Summer Tour match between historic Liga MX clubs Chivas de Guadalajara and Club Atlas on Wednesday, July 5 at 7:30 p.m. The match marks the first time in over 18 years that Chivas will play in the Alamo City. Atlas will make their second visit to Toyota Field in less than a year after playing a friendly against Cruz Azul in October of 2016.
San Antonio FC Season Ticket Members will have an exclusive pre-sale window to purchase tickets to the match starting tomorrow at 10 a.m. Tickets can be purchased by visiting Ticketmaster.com and the pre-sale window will end tomorrow at midnight. Tickets will then be on sale to the general public through Ticketmaster and La Michoacana Meat Market, starting on Thursday, May 18 at 10 a.m.
“We are excited to host two historic Mexican clubs at Toyota Field,” said Director of Toyota Field Dave Susi. “This will be the first time Chivas has played in San Antonio in almost two decades, and we are looking forward to this exciting match as well as other upcoming events at Toyota Field in the future.”
Chivas de Guadalajara is one of the most successful teams in Mexican soccer history. The club has won 11 first division titles and earned its fourth Copa MX championship in April, the second-most titles in both competitions’ history. Chivas is notorious for developing homegrown talent, including the likes of Omar Bravo, Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, and Carlos Vela, and currently holds the record for the longest winning streak at the beginning of the season in Liga MX (eight games). Chivas finished the 2017 Clausura season in third place with 27 points in 17 matches.
Founded in 1916, Club Atlas is a one-time Liga MX champion and four-time winner of the Copa MX tournament. Atlas is one of three teams that plays in the city of Guadalajara and the club just celebrated its Centennial last year. Currently, Atlas just finished the 2017 Liga MX Clausura season in sixth place with 26 points in 17 matches.
Chivas recently defeated Atlas over a two-legged playoff quarterfinal to advance to the semifinals where they will face Toluca for the right to play in the 2017 Clausura Championship. The rivalry between Chivas and Atlas, dubbed El Clasico Tapatio, has existed for over 100 years and is considered the oldest rivalry in Mexican soccer.
The last time Chivas played a match in San Antonio was in February of 1999 when they defeated Monterrey 4-2 thanks to goals from Ricardo Pelaez, Mariano Varela, Felipe Robles and Armando Moctezuma. Club Atlas earned a 2-2 draw against Cruz Azul when the two clubs met at Toyota Field last fall.
An 8,000-seat stadium, Toyota Field opened in 2013 and has been the home of the USL club San Antonio FC since the spring of 2016. The facility was acquired in 2015 by the City of San Antonio and Bexar County in partnership with Spurs Sports & Entertainment, who now control all operations of the facility along with the neighboring STAR Soccer Complex.
Western Conference leaders San Antonio FC will host former Mexican international Omar Bravo and Phoenix Rising FC this Saturday, May 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Toyota Field. The club will then travel to face Swope Park Rangers on May 26 before returning home a week later.
