San Antonio FC midfielder Mikey Lopez was named to the USL Team of the Week, the league announced today. Lopez scored the equalizing goal and assisted the winner in the 2-1 victory over Saint Louis FC last Saturday.  

Lopez played 90 minutes and equalized in the first half after his header was tucked into the corner of the net, marking his second goal in as many games for SAFC. In the second half, Lopez then crossed in a ball from the right-hand corner which ultimately found the head of SAFC midfielder Kris Tyrpak who scored the winning-goal.

In addition, Typrak was named to the Team of the Week Bench after his goal and earlier assist to Lopez helped pave the way for a San Antonio home victory. Tyrpak was named to the Team of the Week once in 2017, while Lopez’s inclusion marks his first time receiving such an honor.

Saint Louis FC finished the 2017 season in 12th place in the standings, missing out on the USL playoffs and going 9-14-9 in the regular season. STLFC opened their 2018 campaign last Saturday with a 1-1 draw at Rio Grande Valley FC.

For San Antonio FC, home field advantage will play a key role in the match. Last season, SAFC lost just one match at home, earning eight wins and seven draws at Toyota Field en route to a second-place finish in the Western Conference standings and the club’s first-ever USL Playoffs run.

San Antonio FC will broadcast nine home matches on FOX Sports Southwest (FSSW), and FOX Sports Southwest Plus during the 2018 USL season, the club announced today. Three matches will air live on FSSW, while the other six will air on FSSW Plus – FOX Sports Southwest’s alternate channel. All matches will stream live on FOX Sports GO.    

FOX Sports Southwest’s coverage of the season begins against the Tulsa Roughnecks on Saturday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. from Toyota Field, which will air on FSSW Plus. FSSW Plus will also air a second home matchup on June 2 when SAFC takes on the Portland Timbers 2. The following two matches – on June 23 vs. Reno and June 26 vs. OKC – will air on FSSW.

FSSW Plus will then air four matches between July 4 and August 4 prior to San Antonio’s August 25 match vs. Swope Park Rangers airing on FSSW, rounding out the network’s coverage of SAFC in 2018.

“Our guys fought very hard until the final whistle and the final chance of the game,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “When you play Sacramento, it’s always going to be very difficult. It’s a hard place to earn points and tonight we fell a little bit short.”

Sacramento opened the scoring just before the halftime whistle after midfielder Keven Aleman capitalized on a through-ball from teammate Cameron Iwasa and beat SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo with a high shot for the 1-0 lead.

The hosts added a second goal just three minutes into the second half after forward Christian Eissele cleaned up a rebound inside the SAFC box following a save from Restrepo.

San Antonio FC midfielder Mikey Lopez then narrowed the deficit in the 68th minute after a shot from midfielder Connor Presley bounced off the woodwork and made its way to defender Darnell King at the top of the box. King played a square pass to Lopez at the edge of the area, from where the Texas native finessed the ball past goalkeeper Josh Cohen.

The club went undefeated in seven matches, including a notable 5-1 win against Tulsa Roughnecks FC (USL), a 2-0 win over FC Dallas (MLS), and a thrilling 3-3 draw against New England Revolution (MLS). After just over a month of preparation, the team is ready to enter official competition.

“We’re excited to get the season going,” SAFC captain Ryan Roushandel said. “We’ve been working on our cohesiveness and team chemistry, and now that we have that, we’re ready to get started with important games. You couldn’t ask for a tougher start than a road match at Sacramento. Their atmosphere is really good so it’ll be easy to get excited and be up for the challenge.”

Entering its third year in existence, SAFC is no stranger to opening the season on the road. The club previously opened its 2016 inaugural campaign at Seattle Sounders FC 2, where it earned a comfortable 3-0 win, including a brace from former SAFC forward Jason Johnson in the first 10 minutes of the match.

In 2017, the Alamo City club opened the season with a 1-0 win in a South Texas Derby match at Rio Grande Valley FC, marking the team’s first victory over their in-state rivals in franchise history. “Starting on the road isn’t ideal,” Powell said. “But this is the third year in a row for us being away from home on opening day, so fortunately we know what that’s like. Our preparation hasn’t been that much different from past years, but the important thing is the players know their roles and responsibilities going into the weekend.”

San Antonio FC scored four second-half goals to wrap up a 5-1 victory over the Tulsa Roughnecks in the club’s final preseason match. Goals from Kris Tyrpak, Ever Guzman, Alex Bruce and a brace from Jose Escalante helped concluded an undefeated preseason for the Alamo City club.

“Overall preseason has gone well for us,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “We've progressed from week to week and today was no different. We wanted to get out on the front foot and Tulsa made it difficult for us. But we managed to get a couple of goals in quick succession and that made the score line look more comfortable than it actually was.”

SAFC opened the scoring after Cesar Elizondo found Tyrpak with a through ball following a counter attack. Tyrpak made no mistake and passed the ball into the back of the net off the inside of the post, giving SAFC a 1-0 lead into halftime. In the second half, Guzman took advantage of a turnover and slotted home past the diving Tulsa keeper to double San Antonio’s lead. Just minutes later after another Tulsa turnover, Escalante fired a loose ball in the box into the roof of the net to give San Antonio a 3-0 lead. The Honduran would record his brace later in the half after he calmly bent a free-kick into the side netting of the far post. Bruce would make it 5-0 after Omar Gordon caused a turnover and dribbled the ball into the box before squaring to Bruce who was able to tap home. Tulsa added a consolation goal in the last few minutes to end the match with a 5-1 score line.

As part of its ongoing effort to impact everyday environments to develop world-class players, the U.S. Soccer Development Academy has expanded its membership of 197 existing clubs for the 2018-2019 season, welcoming 16 new clubs that include 32 additional teams, as well as 37 additional teams from existing clubs. The SAFC Pro Academy's expansion U-15 team was accepted by U.S. Soccer today.

“We are delighted that US Soccer has shown San Antonio FC the continued support of our program for acceptance and expansion of our USSF Development Academy Program for the 2018/19 season," said SAFC Pro Academy Director Nick Evans.

"Adding another age group to our Pro Academy this year continues us on our path towards our goal of having a complete Pathway to the San Antonio FC USL Professional Team for all age groups and players from San Antonio and the Greater Area. With the addition of the U-15 Age Group next season our players will have the opportunity to participate in National Showcase events and an expanded Game Programming against quality competition in the Frontier Division.”

New clubs and clubs receiving expansion into new age groups were selected for admission to the Development Academy's 12th season based on:

• Academy leadership and quality of coaching staff
• Desire to embrace Development Academy philosophy and core values
• Infrastructure and investment of resources
• Player production history, player pool depth and geographic location

Four new clubs are being introduced for the second year of Girls' programming, while 12 Academies will be welcomed for Boys' programming. These new clubs will account for 14 and 20 additional teams, respectively, while 26 existing clubs on the Boys' side have been granted additional teams in age groups where they previously did not field a team.

While the number of divisions remains the same for both gender programs, clubs from two new geographical regions are joining the Girls' Development Academy: Oklahoma Energy FC (Oklahoma City, Ok.) and Sporting Omaha (Omaha, Neb.). While a small number of clubs were added for the 2018-19 Girls' Development Academy Season, there was an encouragingly sizeable pool of applicants.

With the addition of Utah Royals FC, eight of nine NWSL clubs will be represented in the Academy. The addition of Toronto FC means that all 23 current MLS clubs are now part of the Development Academy.

In total, the Boys' Development Academy will see 12 new teams added to the U-12 age group, 14 to U-13, eight to U-14, 10 to U-15, six to U-16/17 and five additional new teams added to U-18/19. The 2018-19 Girls' Development Academy season will welcome a total of four new teams to U-14, four to U-15, three to U-16/17 and three to U-18/19.

"The Development Academy is focused on creating a clear pathway for players across the country. The expansion for the 2018-19 season creates opportunities in new markets that show potential, while building on existing markets that have successfully developed players," Development Academy Director Jared Micklos said. "This expansion is based on the quality of work that Clubs and coaches are doing in their environments every day, investing in the development of each individual player. We look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with existing and new Academy clubs as we continue our mission to develop world-class players."
