San Antonio FC (3-2-3) will face Rio Grande Valley FC (1-3-4) at H-E-B Park on Saturday, May 12 at 7:30 p.m. The match marks the first edition of the South Texas Derby in 2018 as SAFC looks to build on its two-match winning streak.
The Alamo City club enters the derby after earning a 2-1 win over Fresno FC last Saturday at Toyota Field, marking the team’s second consecutive victory and their first back-to-back wins of the season after beating Las Vegas Lights FC 3-1 the previous week. SAFC has scored five of their nine goals this season in their previous two outings, with seven different players sharing the wealth of goals, including 19-year-old forward Alex Bruce, who scored his first professional goal in the club’s win against Fresno FC.
Midfielder Jose Escalante will face his former team alongside SAFC for the first time since joining the club prior to the 2018 season. Escalante was one of three players who scored their first goal for the club against Las Vegas, and while the Honduran has fond memories of his time with RGVFC, he is determined to earn three points for the Alamo City club.
“It’s neat to go back to the city where I played,” Escalante said. “But now I owe it all to this organization, and I will defend these colors to the death.”
In addition to Escalante, San Antonio FC will also have newly-signed forward Kyle Murphy available for selection on Saturday. Murphy spent the 2016-17 seasons with RGVFC and led the Toros in goals scored (seven) in 2017 while adding three assists.
SAFC currently sits in eighth place in the Western Conference standings, while RGVFC sits in 14th place with seven points after recording just one win so far this season.
The match marks the eighth edition of the South Texas Derby since both teams’ 2016 inaugural season. SAFC earned two wins in the three derbies of 2017, including the team’s first road win against RGVFC on March 26 in the first match of the campaign and a 3-1 win in the final match of the regular season at Toyota Field on October 14.
Following the match at RGVFC, San Antonio FC will begin its Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup run on Wednesday, May 16 at Midland-Odessa Sockers FC.
