San Antonio FC will host Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (USL) at Toyota Field on Wednesday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match marks just the second time that SAFC will host an Open Cup match in franchise history.

SAFC heads into the match just three days after recording a 1-1 draw at home against Tulsa Roughnecks FC in USL play. The club also returns to Open Cup action after earning a 4-0 win at Midland-Odessa Sockers FC in the second round of the tournament last Wednesday with goals from Darnell King, Mikey Lopez, Maxi Rodriguez, and Omar Gordon.

Gordon has tallied two goals in as many matches in Open Cup and USL play, scoring once in stoppage time in Midland and again last Saturday against Tulsa. The Jamaican also tallied an assist to set up Rodriguez’s goal last Wednesday.

The match marks the first of the season between SAFC and the Switchbacks. San Antonio FC is currently 1-2-1 all-time against the Switchbacks in league play, earning one win and one draw when playing at Toyota Field. Should SAFC earn a win on Wednesday, the club’s fourth-round opponent will be announced on Thursday, May 24 at 10 a.m. by U.S. Soccer.

Following Wednesday’s match, SAFC will return to USL action on Saturday, May 26 as the club travels to face Reno 1868 FC.

“We haven’t lost (in five matches), but if you go in the locker room you’ll find players that are disappointed,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We didn’t lose tonight, but we have a passionate group of players, which is very important, and every time they play and step on the field they have the desire to win.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the seventh minute when captain Ryan Roushandel sent a long ball to defender Greg Cochrane down the left flank. Cochrane crossed the ball into the box, where midfielder Omar Gordon buried a shot past goalkeeper Fabian Cerda for the 1-0 lead.

The goal marked the first of the season for Gordon and second overall for the club in USL play. Gordon also scored on Wednesday in the team’s first U.S. Open Cup match at Midland Odessa Sockers FC. The assist marked the first of the season and seventh overall for Cochrane since joining the club prior to its 2016 inaugural season.

The Roughnecks then leveled the score in the 51st minute after forward Joaquin Rivas collected the ball at the top of the box and beat goalkeeper Diego Restrepo from distance to equalize.

The draw extends the Alamo City club’s unbeaten streak to five matches in USL play. SAFC is 3-0-3 since April 22, when they earned a 0-0 draw at Fresno FC.

“I thought before the game it’s always a challenge especially on the road against the NPSL finalists from last year,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “The players who wore the jersey tonight took their opportunities and played hard from start to finish. SAFC opened the scoring in the 34th minute when defender Darnell King beat the Sockers’ goalkeeper with a point-blank header following chaos inside the box. The goal marked King’s first for the club since joining prior to the 2018 season. The Florida native currently leads the club in assists (three) in USL play.

Midfielder Mikey Lopez added to the Alamo City club’s lead in the 87th minute when he buried a free kick from just outside the box to make it 2-0. The goal marked Lopez’s third for the club in all competitions.

San Antonio native Maxi Rodriguez added a third goal in stoppage time, capitalizing off a pass from midfielder Omar Gordon. The goal also marked Rodriguez’s first for the club since joining prior to the 2017 USL campaign. Gordon then capped off the night for SAFC after launching a one-man counter attack up the middle of the field, which he concluded by slotting the ball past the Midland keeper to make it 4-0.

The win tied the club’s biggest victory in franchise history in all competitions. SAFC previously achieved the feat when it beat Reno 1868 FC at Toyota Field on April 15, 2017, and again when the club earned a 4-0 win at Portland Timbers 2 on April 28, 2017.

SAFC will now host its third-round match against the Switchbacks after the USL side defeated FC Denver on Wednesday night.

“I thought before the game it’s always a challenge especially on the road against the NPSL finalists from last year,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “The players who wore the jersey tonight took their opportunities and played hard from start to finish. All in all, we are excited to advance in this historic competition.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the 34th minute when defender Darnell King beat the Sockers’ goalkeeper with a point-blank header following chaos inside the box. The goal marked King’s first for the club since joining prior to the 2018 season. The Florida native currently leads the club in assists (three) in USL play.

Midfielder Mikey Lopez added to the Alamo City club’s lead in the 87th minute when he buried a free kick from just outside the box to make it 2-0. The goal marked Lopez’s third for the club in all competitions.

San Antonio native Maxi Rodriguez added a third goal in stoppage time, capitalizing off a pass from midfielder Omar Gordon. The goal also marked Rodriguez’s first for the club since joining prior to the 2017 USL campaign. Gordon then capped off the night for SAFC after launching a one-man counter attack up the middle of the field, which he concluded by slotting the ball past the Midland keeper to make it 4-0.

The win tied the club’s biggest victory in franchise history in all competitions. SAFC previously achieved the feat when it beat Reno 1868 FC at Toyota Field on April 15, 2017, and again when the club earned a 4-0 win at Portland Timbers 2 on April 28, 2017.

SAFC will now host its third-round match against the Switchbacks after the USL side defeated FC Denver on Wednesday night.

The Alamo City club will return to action in just three days as it hosts Tulsa Roughnecks FC at Toyota Field on Saturday, May 19 during Military Appreciation Night, presented by Toyota.

San Antonio FC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo was named to the USL Team of the Week, the league announced today. Restrepo recorded five saves in his third clean sheet of the season during the 0-0 draw at RGV FC last Saturday.

Restrepo’s five saves are fell just one short of his all-time high with the club, which he matched earlier this season in Fresno on April 21. Since the start of the 2017 campaign, Restrepo leads the club with 15 clean sheets. The San Antonio number one has been named the SWBC Man of the Match in three of his last four matches, and he has conceded more than one goal in a match just six times over the course of his Alamo City career.

Restrepo has now earned USL Team of the Week honors twice in 2018. Last season, San Antonio had eight different players included in the Team of the Week 13 different times over the course of their 32 matches, with Restrepo also earning the honors twice.
