San Antonio FC (8-5-7) beat OKC Energy FC (6-11-5) 2-1 at Taft Stadium on Saturday night. Goals from Mikey Lopez and Ever Guzman earned the Alamo City club a comeback victory in its first win against the Energy.

“I’m extremely proud of the players’ application to earn three wins over the past eight days,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “It’s great to come to OKC and earn our first victory against this good organization and a well-coached team. We’re pleased to earn the three points and to show the character that we did tonight to earn a win after going a goal down.”

The energy opened the scoring in the 58th minute when midfielder Philip Rasmussen buried a direct kick from just outside the visitors’ box.

SAFC then found the equalizer in the 73rd minute after midfielder Connor Presley earned a penalty after being brought down inside the hosts’ box. Midfielder and Texas native Lopez stepped up and converted from the spot to level the score 1-1. The goal marks Lopez’s third for the club this season.

The Alamo City club scored the winning goal less than ten minutes later when midfielder Charlie Ward sent a cross deep into the box. Guzman finished on his first touch from point-blank range to gain the 2-1 lead. The goal marks Guzman’s third of the season, while the assist marks Ward’s first for the club since joining the team last month.

The win marks the first SAFC victory against OKC Energy FC. The clubs have faced each other eight times in the USL regular season since San Antonio’s 2016 inaugural season, playing to six draws and an OKC win prior to tonight’s match. The victory also marks the third time this season that the Alamo City club has come from behind to earn a win in 2018.

With the win, SAFC concludes a run of three matches in the span of eight days during which the club recorded three consecutive wins. SAFC currently sits in eighth place in the Western Conference standings.

San Antonio FC will return to USL action on Saturday, August 4 as they host LA Galaxy II at Toyota Field.

San Antonio FC (7-5-7) beat Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (8-11-4) 1-0 on Wednesday night at Toyota Field. A goal from forward Kyle Murphy earned the Alamo City club three points at home for the second time in the span of four days.

“I thought tonight the character of our players, their attitude, application and work rate were very good,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We made some changes from our match over the weekend and I think that shows the depth of the locker room within this group.”

SAFC scored the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute when defender Darnell King received the ball on the right flank from teammate Maxi Rodriguez and sent in a cross to the center of the box. Murphy connected with a header and placed the ball far-post past goalkeeper Steward Ceus for the 1-0 lead. The goal marks Murphy’s first for the club in his sixth USL appearance since joining the team on May 10. The assist also marks King’s team-leading fifth of the season.

San Antonio native Matthew Cardone recorded his first clean sheet of the season in just his second appearance in 2018. The shutout marks the keeper’s eighth overall in his three seasons with SAFC, and the fifth for the club this season.

The win comes after the Alamo City club previously earned a 4-2 win against league-leaders Real Monarchs SLC last Saturday at Toyota Field. San Antonio FC midfielder Charlie Ward was named to the USL Team of the Week, the league announced today. Ward’s dominating performance in the center of midfield helped SAFC defeat the Western Conference-leading Real Monarchs SLC 4-2 last Saturday.  

Ward started, played 86 minutes and scored his first professional goal from a direct free-kick en route to the big win for San Antonio FC. The England native led both teams with 79 touches, 65 total passes and four key passes. Ward added a 90.8 percent passing accuracy, a team-high three tackles and two clearances while the midfielder also didn’t concede a foul over the course of his time on the field.

This marks the first inclusion in the USL Team of the Week for Ward after joining the club in June. Overall in his time with SAFC, Ward has appeared in four matches, making two starts and recording a 90.5 percent passing accuracy over 216 total minutes.

San Antonio FC (6-5-7) beat Real Monarchs SLC (13-5-2) 4-2 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. Goals from Omar Gordon, Ever Guzman, Charlie Ward and an own goal earned SAFC three points at home against the Western Conference leaders.

“I’m proud of our players,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “They made sure they were always ready for the next play and that’s something they should take pride in. The game is going to have ups and down, but I’m really proud of the way our players responded to minor setbacks and didn’t allow them to become major setbacks.”

SAFC got off to a hot start when midfielder Omar Gordon forced an own goal from Michael Gallagher in the first minute of the match, marking the quickest goal in club history. The Monarchs then equalized in the 16th minute when midfielder Sebastien Velasquez beat goalkeeper Diego Restrepo near-post after dribbling into the box.

The Alamo City club then reclaimed the lead 11 minutes later after Gordon buried a shot from inside the box following a rebound. San Antonio FC forward Ever Guzman found the back of the net in the 56th after a breakaway and doubled the SAFC lead. Midfielder Mikey Lopez squared a pass into the box for Guzman, which the Mexican finished off with a clever spin to beat a defender and slot the ball into an open net.

The visitors made it a one-goal game again after Velasquez slotted past Diego Restrepo, marking their final goal of the match. SAFC capped off the night in the 68th minute when midfielder Charlie Ward buried a direct kick to make it 4-2.

The goal marked Ward’s first professional goal in his fifth appearance for the club, while Guzman’s marked the forward’s second of the season and seventh overall in all competitions since joining the club in late 2017.

San Antonio FC (6-5-7) beat Real Monarchs SLC (13-5-2) 4-2 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. Goals from Omar Gordon, Ever Guzman, Charlie Ward and an own goal earned SAFC three points at home against the Western Conference leaders.

“I’m proud of our players,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “They made sure they were always ready for the next play and that’s something they should take pride in. The game is going to have ups and down, but I’m really proud of the way our players responded to minor setbacks and didn’t allow them to become major setbacks.”

SAFC got off to a hot start when midfielder Omar Gordon forced an own goal from Michael Gallagher in the first minute of the match, marking the quickest goal in club history. The Monarchs then equalized in the 16th minute when midfielder Sebastien Velasquez beat goalkeeper Diego Restrepo near-post after dribbling into the box.

The Alamo City club then reclaimed the lead 11 minutes later after Gordon buried a shot from inside the box following a rebound. San Antonio FC forward Ever Guzman found the back of the net in the 56th after a breakaway and doubled the SAFC lead. Midfielder Mikey Lopez squared a pass into the box for Guzman, which the Mexican finished off with a clever spin to beat a defender and slot the ball into an open net.

The visitors made it a one-goal game again after Velasquez slotted past Diego Restrepo, marking their final goal of the match. SAFC capped off the night in the 68th minute when midfielder Charlie Ward buried a direct kick to make it 4-2.

The goal marked Ward’s first professional goal in his fifth appearance for the club, while Guzman’s marked the forward’s second of the season and seventh overall in all competitions since joining the club in late 2017.

The match will be the USL Game of the Week and it marks the second SAFC match to air on ESPNU along with San Antonio’s 1-1 draw with the OKC Energy FC on July 14, 2017. The fireworks show will begin soon after the conclusion of the match, and will be displayed behind the north end of the stadium.

Following the final whistle, ‘Extra Time’ will begin behind the east concourse of Toyota Field and will be open until 11 p.m. Fans will be able to enjoy live music as well as $1 beer from The Tap Inn – the new 30-tap beer trailer at Toyota Field, which will be the only location to feature the eight new craft beers inside the stadium – while $1 sodas will also be available. ‘Extra Time’ will also feature games like giant jenga and cornhole along with other activities. “Tonight, we didn’t get the result we wanted, and now we have to begin preparing for next Saturday night,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Our team is always competing for their place in the squad and this upcoming week will be no different as we prepare for two matches in a short span of time.”

Orange County opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when midfielder Aodhan Quinn stripped the ball from an SAFC defender and found midfielder Thomas Enevoldsen in on goal for a tap-in to earn the 1-0 lead.

The hosts then added a second goal in the 63rd minute following a denied chance from a corner kick. Quinn collected the ball and dribbled inside, feeding midfielder Mats Bjurman a pass for a point-blank finish to widen their lead. The hosts then added a third in stoppage time after forward Michael Seaton finished off a counter-attack.

San Antonio FC beat Liga MX champions Santos Laguna 2-1 at Toyota Field on Saturday night in front of 7,041 fans. The win marks the club’s first against international opposition.

“Obviously Santos is a fantastic team and top-quality opposition,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “They gave us problems throughout the course of the game, but when you play with that hunger, desire, and togetherness from every man on the roster, this team has shown well. I can’t speak highly enough of our players, their performance, and their efforts tonight.”

Santos opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the match when forward Djaniny found himself in on goal following a wall pass from Julio Furch. The Cape Verde native then slotted the ball past SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo for the 1-0 lead.

SAFC then responded immediately. Just one minute later, forward Kyle Murphy found forward Mike Seth deep in the box with a cross. Seth headed it powerfully into the back of the net past goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco to equalize. The goal marks Seth’s first for the club in all competitions since joining SAFC midway through the 2017 campaign. Seth also earned SWBC Man of the Match honors for the first time following his performance on the night.

The Alamo City club then earned the winning goal in the 80th minute when forward Ever Guzman buried a shot following chaos in the box after an SAFC corner kick. The goal marks the second in all competitions this season for the Mexico native. Guzman previously scored on April 27 at Las Vegas Lights FC in USL play.

San Antonio FC beat Liga MX champions Santos Laguna 2-1 at Toyota Field on Saturday night in front of 7,041 fans. The win marks the club’s first against international opposition.

“Obviously Santos is a fantastic team and top-quality opposition,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “They gave us problems throughout the course of the game, but when you play with that hunger, desire, and togetherness from every man on the roster, this team has shown well. I can’t speak highly enough of our players, their performance, and their efforts tonight.”

Santos opened the scoring in the 16th minute of the match when forward Djaniny found himself in on goal following a wall pass from Julio Furch. The Cape Verde native then slotted the ball past SAFC goalkeeper Diego Restrepo for the 1-0 lead.

SAFC then responded immediately. Just one minute later, forward Kyle Murphy found forward Mike Seth deep in the box with a cross. Seth headed it powerfully into the back of the net past goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco to equalize. The goal marks Seth’s first for the club in all competitions since joining SAFC midway through the 2017 campaign. Seth also earned SWBC Man of the Match honors for the first time following his performance on the night.

The Alamo City club then earned the winning goal in the 80th minute when forward Ever Guzman buried a shot following chaos in the box after an SAFC corner kick. The goal marks the second in all competitions this season for the Mexico native. Guzman previously scored on April 27 at Las Vegas Lights FC in USL play.

San Antonio FC returns to USL action on Saturday, July 14 as they travel to face Orange County SC for the first time this season. The club is 5-4-7 in league play so far this season.
