Five SAFC Pro Academy players were selected by U.S. Soccer among 80 participants who will gather in Frisco, TX for the U.S. Soccer Youth National Teams Under-14 Talent Identification Central Region Mini-Camp from March 14-18 at the Toyota Soccer Center.

SAFC Pro Academy players Bryan Arellano, Daniel Ordonez, Kai Louviere, Roberto Renteria, and Kimbikula Mbula will represent the Alamo City on the field, while SAFC Pro Academy Director Nick Evans will serve as head coach for the South Central Select Team throughout the event.

During the camp, 80players from the Central Region will make up 20-playerteamsbased on the region’s four defined scouting areas (North Central, South Central, Midwest and Southeast). U.S. Soccer staff, including Director of TID Tony Lepore and the three boys’ TID Managers, Henry Brauner, Garrett Biller and Cris da Silva, will run the camp, while the four teams will be coached by YNT Network Scouts and Development Academy coaches from the four respective scouting areas. After a day of training, the four teams will play each other in round-robin competition.

The SAFC Pro Academy is a fully-funded program dedicated to identifying and training players in the San Antonio area to provide a pathway to become a player for the SAFC first team, national teams, and/or opportunities for college soccer. The Academy currently fields four age group teams that compete in the Development Academy, the highest tier of youth soccer in the United States, while the program recently announced it has been accepted for expansion into the U-17 age group for the upcoming DA season.

“Tonight was very positive from our guys,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “As a group, our players should take a lot of positives from tonight’s performance, and as we continue to improve I think we’re going to see some good soccer from these players.”

SAFC opened the scoring just nine minutes in when midfielder Lance Laing played a low cross into the box and found Guzman, who slotted it in to score his first of the season and 16th overall for the club, adding to his all-time leading scoring record. The assist marked Laing’s seventh overall since joining the club in late August last season.

Phoenix then equalized in the 22nd minute after forward Junior Flemings found the end of a cross and drove it in from close-range past SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone. SAFC re-gained the lead in the 40th minute after Forbes dribbled into space and buried a shot from the top of the box to make it 2-1.

The goal marks Forbes’ 11th goal overall for the club after joining the team for his second stint since the 2017 season, while midfielder Pecka recorded his second assist since joining the team prior to the 2017 campaign as well.

The visitors equalized again just three minutes later after finding the end of a cross in the SAFC box, leveling the score just before the halftime break.

SAFC took the lead yet again in the 80th minute after Jahn scored an own goal following a corner kick from Jack Barmby to make it 3-2, however Phoenix found a stoppage-time equalizer through former SAFC forward Jason Johnson in the 93rd minute.

The night’s attendance marks the fifth-highest in franchise history for San Antonio FC. The club will return to USL action as they host Portland Timbers 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 16 at Toyota Field.

On the dawn of the 2019 USL Championship opener on March 9, Powell is as eager as ever to get started.

Fans will be treated to giveaways, a dollar drink night, a postgame party and a postgame fireworks show. Powell expresses his excitement to finally share opening night with the Alamo City crowd in year four of the club’s existence.

“It’s great to share opening day with our fans,” said Powell. “Typically, the last three years, we have started on the road, so we haven’t been able to share that experience with the fans. So now fans get to see the team first-hand and in person. They make Toyota Field a fantastic venue and probably the best venue in the league, so we are excited to share opening night with them, and they can see all the hard work put in by the players and coaches first hand on March 9.”

Now it’s a matter of implementing those ideas into the regular season. Off the field, the players have gelled well. We have done a lot of activities and you can see the players and the relationships starting to form. We have a good group of guys and a good atmosphere within the group.”

Even since SAFC joined the league in 2016, the English native says the strength of competition has only gone up and is at an all-time high entering the 2019 season. “The quality of players is getting higher and higher,” Powell says. “Players that may have been playing in MLS previously in this stage of their career could now play in the USL Championship, and that’s not just in San Antonio but across the board. The growth of soccer in the U.S. is massive at all levels. From the professional side of things, the quality of players being attracted to the league is growing which makes the league more competitive.”

“We are thrilled to be notified of this decision by U.S. Soccer and we are pleased to expand our SAFC Pro Academy program to provide more opportunities for our players,” SAFC Pro Academy Director Nick Evans said. “This decision takes us closer to the completion of our Phase 1 five-year project to establish a full-time Youth Development Pathway at our club from U-12 through to the first team.”

With the addition of the U-17 group, SAFC will field five full-time teams playing in the DA alongside the club’s Elite Training Program, which serves to identify and offer training opportunities to players who are not within the age range for the academy’s DA teams.

Fans in attendance can enjoy $1 beer and sodas throughout the match as well as during ‘Extra Time,’ which will feature games, music, and more behind section 125. $1 drinks will also be available at the Tap Inn, a 34-tap trailer on the east concourse of Toyota Field which offers a variety of craft beers. The postgame fireworks show will start shortly after the final whistle in celebration of the start of the team’s 2019 campaign.

San Antonio FC will host Phoenix Rising FC at Toyota Field this Saturday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the club’s 2019 USL Championship home opener presented by H-E-B. The game will be a Dollar Drink Night presented by Bud Light and will include a postgame Fireworks show and an ‘Extra Time’ Postgame Party.

Fans in attendance can enjoy $1 beer and sodas throughout the match as well as during ‘Extra Time,’ which will feature games, music, and more behind section 125. $1 drinks will also be available at the Tap Inn, a 34-tap trailer on the east concourse of Toyota Field which offers a variety of craft beers. The postgame fireworks show will start shortly after the final whistle in celebration of the start of the team’s 2019 campaign.

The first 1,000 fans at Toyota Field will receive a free rally towel courtesy of H-E-B, while the first 5,000 fans over the age of 21 can get a complimentary magnet schedule courtesy of Bud Light.

With the 2019 USL Championship season quickly approaching, San Antonio FC continues to prepare as a squad for their home opener against Phoenix Rising FC this Saturday. Three players in particular – defenders Eby Ackon and Johnny Fenwick; and midfielder Leeroy Maguraushe – are preparing to kick-off their first professional season in 2019.

All three players were plying their trade in NCAA Division 1 schools last season, racking up plenty awards and honors between the trio of them. But now, as the temperatures begin to finally rise in San Antonio, all three are putting the finishing touches on a solid training camp and preparing for their first professional season with the Alamo City club.

“It’s been great,” Ackon said of preseason. “This is a fantastic environment for me and I’m learning a lot. I’m getting accolated to the players around me and all my teammates have been welcoming and helpful. The past few weeks I’ve felt great and I’m really enjoying this.”

Maguraushe echoed Ackon’s sentiments about how preseason has progressed. With the group still gelling and continuing to learn about each other, it is vital to see team chemistry start to take shape. Despite this being their first experiences, Maguraushe speaks to the positivity that is currently coursing through the squad.

“It’s been amazing,” said Maguraushe. “I’m learning a lot of new things and I’m happy to be playing with this group. I’ve just been enjoying everything, really.”

Despite their enjoyment of camp so far, the players acknowledged the stark difference between the collegiate game and the professional game. All three were standout players with their respective schools, but when they joined the pros they joined a squad of players who were all standout college athletes who have also now added extensive professional resumes.

The transition is helped by the support they are getting from their teammates, the technical staff and the front office as the preseason comes to a close.

“It’s a big difference between college and the pros,” said Fenwick. “Obviously, the quality of play is a lot higher. The professionalism of this club is really good, so it’s certainly different from college.”

“The biggest change has been the speed of the game,” Maguraushe added. “Playing faster and thinking a lot more quickly has been the biggest challenge, but it’s been getting a little easier with time and I’m looking forward to continuing to progress.”

In Ackon’s case, the defender has been working on getting comfortable in multiple positions across the back line. In addition to the natural steps needed to be taken from the collegiate level to the professional level, these three talented rookies have also had to try and adapt to different positions and styles of play as the coaching staff determines the way they want to line up this Saturday in the opener against Phoenix.

“I’ve learned a lot in just a month,” said Ackon. “For instance, playing at left-back is a new role for me, so I’m learning to adapt, but the instructions that the technical staff has given me has been great and I’m getting used to the new role quickly.”

With just a few days separating the team from the start of their season, all three rookies continue to try and impress the staff to earn a spot on the first 18-man squad of the year. What doesn’t change however, is the collective team goals and the personal goals shared between members of its roster. Each of them is looking for success on the field and they are willing to adapt to whatever role helps achieve that.

“We have come in and everyone has been at it from the off,” said Fenwick. “We are learning a new style of play and a new identity. We have been coached really well and we are in the right positions going into Saturday’s game.”
