San Antonio FC (7-9-6) fell to Sacramento Republic FC (9-9-3) 2-3 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. Goals from midfielders Jack Barmby and Pecka were not enough to salvage points at home for the Alamo City club after conceding three goals in the first half.

“Tonight was a reflection of two halves of soccer,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “They capitalized on their set pieces in the first half that put us on the back foot, but our guys came out in the second half with the urgency, and I think if we had scored a little bit earlier, something could have happened.”

Sacramento opened the scoring in the 21st minute after forward Stefano Bonomo found the end of a corner kick from Sam Werner and beat goalkeeper Matthew Cardone with a header for the 1-0 lead. The visitors doubled their lead in the 33rd minute when forward Cameron Iwassa headed in a lob from midfielder Drew Skundrich. Sacramento then ended the half with their third goal after Bonomo finished off a team buildup to score his second on the night.

SAFC narrowed the gap in the 51st minute after Barmby finished low off a direct kick to score his fifth goal of the season, which is tied for the second-most on the squad behind forward Frank Lopez.

The Alamo City club struck again late into stoppage time after defender Joshua Yaro found Pecka at the top of the box following a corner, from which the Brazilian fired back-post with a powerful strike to beat goalkeeper Rafael Diaz. The goal marked Pecka’s first of the season and second for SAFC since joining the club prior to the 2017 campaign.

San Antonio FC will return to USL Championship action on Saturday, Aug. 10 as the club visits Reno 1868 FC in their second matchup of 2019. SAFC previously earned a 3-2 win over Reno at Toyota Field on June 8.

SAFC enters the match currently riding a five-game unbeaten streak after defeating the Real Monarchs 3-1 last Saturday. SAFC is one of just three USL Championship teams who entered this week unbeaten in their last five league matches (also, Phoenix Rising FC, New York Red Bulls II). In addition, San Antonio has lost just one league match in their last eight and are unbeaten in their last nine USL Championship games in the friendly confines of Toyota Field.

The newest addition to the San Antonio FC roster, Frank Lopez, will look to build on his impressive start for the club. In his first three games, Lopez has scored three goals, recorded one assists and added nine shots, six shots on target and five key passes. Should Lopez and company help SAFC earn three points this Saturday, the club will record its longest unbeaten streak since the 2017 season.  

Republic FC travel to San Antonio after a 0-0 draw against Orange County SC and a 1-2 loss to New Mexico United in their last two matches. Sacramento is 1-3-1 in their last five USL Championship matches and is 3-6-1 on the road so far in 2019. However, the Republic defeated San Antonio in the only other matchup between the two this season on June 1. In all six matches between SAFC and Republic FC, Sacramento has never conceded more than one goal in a single game to the Alamo City club.

San Antonio FC (6-8-6) will host Real Monarchs SLC (8-6-4) at Toyota Field on Saturday, July 27 during Breast Health Awareness Night, presented by Methodist Healthcare System. The match will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest with Dan Weiss and Gabe Garcia on the call.

SAFC heads into the match after earning a win and a draw in back to back away matches last week. The club earned a 3-1 win against El Paso Locomotive FC on Wednesday with a brace from newcomer Frank Lopez and a goal from Bradford Jamieson IV before splitting points in a scoreless draw with Orange County SC on Saturday.

The Alamo City club is now unbeaten in four consecutive matches, posting a 2-0-2 clip since June 26. SAFC currently sits in 13th place in the Western Conference, but a win could propel the team into ninth place pending other results around the league.

Real Monarchs will look to build on a hot streak of their own as they look to build on their five-game unbeaten run, during which they recorded four wins and one draw. The Monarchs have proven to be a goalscoring threat this season, tallying 37 goals so far which are tied for the fourth-most in the USL Championship.

San Antonio FC (6-8-6) will host Real Monarchs SLC (8-6-4) at Toyota Field on Saturday, July 27 during Breast Health Awareness Night, presented by Methodist Healthcare System. The match will be broadcast on Fox Sports Southwest with Dan Weiss and Gabe Garcia on the call.

SAFC heads into the match after earning a win and a draw in back to back away matches last week. The club earned a 3-1 win against El Paso Locomotive FC on Wednesday with a brace from newcomer Frank Lopez and a goal from Bradford Jamieson IV before splitting points in a scoreless draw with Orange County SC on Saturday.

The Alamo City club is now unbeaten in four consecutive matches, posting a 2-0-2 clip since June 26. SAFC currently sits in 13th place in the Western Conference, but a win could propel the team into ninth place pending other results around the league.

Real Monarchs will look to build on a hot streak of their own as they look to build on their five-game unbeaten run, during which they recorded four wins and one draw. The Monarchs have proven to be a goalscoring threat this season, tallying 37 goals so far which are tied for the fourth-most in the USL Championship.

The SAFC Pro Academy coaching staff was named the U.S. Soccer Development Academy (DA) Central Conference Boys Coaching Staff of the Year, U.S. Soccer announced yesterday. SAFC was honored alongside NYCFC and LAFC of Major League Soccer. The DA announced its 2018-19 awards following the end of the season at the Academy Championships in Irvine, Calif. The Academy gives out the awards to commemorate the best of the best in each conference at the end of its 10-month campaign.

“I am truly thrilled and extremely thankful for the U.S. Soccer Development Academy’s recognition of our SAFC Pro Academy staff this season,” said SAFC Pro Academy Director Nick Evans. “It is a pleasure to share our development process with exceptional people and professionals. We are very appreciative of internal support from our organization along with Spurs Sports & Entertainment’s commitment to the youth in San Antonio.”

The SAFC Pro Academy is overseen by SAFC Head Coach and Technical Director Darren Powell, and Evans – both of whom are among the select group of coaches who have completed the U.S. Soccer Academy Directors’ Course. The SAFC Pro Academy staff during the 2018-19 season consisted of Evans and coaches Tim Chestney, Jeremiah Narvaez, Juan Lamadrid, Alen Marcina and Ryan Roushandel. This season, the academy field four age groups – U-12, U-13, U-14, U-15 – while the club will add a U-17 team when the new campaign kicks off this coming fall. During the 2018-19 DA season, the SAFC U-15 team finished second in the Frontier Division.

It’s a positive point on the road and now we’re looking forward to being back at home with our fans next Saturday.”

Cardone tallied four saves and four claims on the night to record his sixth clean sheet of the season, while defenders Joshua Yaro, Ebenezer Ackon, and Kai Greene combined for seven tackles and 16 clearances to limit the hosts to six shots.

Midfielder Billy Forbes led SAFC in the attack, recording three shots and two on target, while the team combined for seven chances created throughout the match.

SAFC nearly earned the lead in the 90th minute after forward Frank Lopez buried a shot into the back of the net off a counterattack, however an early whistle blown on a foul leading up to the play by defender Leonardo saw the goal called back while the center-back was given a red card.
