San Antonio FC midfielder Walter Restrepo was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week, the league announced today. Restrepo scored two goals and recorded an assist in two matches last week, including a 2-1 home win over Fresno FC on Saturday.  

Overall in his two matches at Tulsa and vs. Fresno last week, Restrepo collected his two goals and assist while adding eight chances created and 10 successful dribbles. In the vital 2-1 home win over Fresno, Restrepo was named the SWBC Man of the Match after his goal and assist helped earned a key three points in the playoff push. The Colombian’s six assists currently lead all SAFC players.

The Team of the Week honor is the first for Restrepo who joined the club prior to the 2019 USL Championship season. SAFC has now had a player on the league’s Team of the Week 12 times this season.

“We have another quick turnaround so we have to put this behind us as quickly as possible,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We need to get ready for Fresno on Saturday because every point in this league now is very valuable.”

The hosts got off to a hot start after forward Tobena Uzo opened the scoring just two minutes into the match with a header. Just four minutes later, midfielder Marlon doubled the lead for the Roughnecks after finding the end of a through-ball and slotting it past goalkeeper Matthew Cardone.

SAFC then narrowed the deficit in the 12th minute when midfielder Brian Gomez found Castillo inside the box, from where the midfielder turned and fired back-post to make it 2-1. Castillo stuck again in the 25th minute with a well-placed free kick to level the score at 2-2. The brace marked Castillo’s second and third goals of the 2019 campaign.

Restrepo earned the lead for the Alamo City club in the 30th minute after dribbling past two defenders and firing a powerful shot near-post past goalkeeper Mason Stajduhar to make it 3-2. The goal marked Restrepo’s second of the season in USL Championship play.

Toyota Field will host Liga MX sides Tigres UANL and Club Atletico de San Luis on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in an exhibition match, presented by SPD Sports.

Tickets for the match will go on sale to the general public at 11 a.m. today and can be purchased online by visiting Ticketmaster.com, with prices starting at $26. Tigres UANL is one of the most decorated clubs in Liga MX history, winning the Liga MX title on seven occasions, most recently winning the Clausura 2019 season as well as the 2019 CONCACAF Champions League. Tigres has also won the three Copa MX and three Campeon de Campeones titles.

Atletico de San Luis will visit Toyota Field for the first time after attaining promotion to the Mexican first division after winning the Ascenso 2019 title with a victory over rivals Dorados de Sinaloa on May 5, 2019. Founded in 2013 following the relocation of San Luis Potosi’s original professional club, San Luis F.C., Atletico de San Luis is currently in 10th place in the Liga MX standings in its first season in the Mexican top flight.

San Antonio FC (10-11-8) tied LA Galaxy II (10-9-10) 1-1 at Dignity Health Sports Park on Friday night. A goal from forward Frank Lopez earned the Alamo City club a point on the road in its first of three matches in the span of nine days.

“Our players played good soccer at times tonight and got into good positions,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “You have to admire their character to earn a point after going down a man for the last 30-plus minutes of the game.”

The hosts opened the scoring early in the first half when midfielder Jorge Hernandez buried a shot from long distance past SAFC goalkeeper Matthew Cardone in the eighth minute for the 1-0 lead.

SAFC equalized just two minutes later after midfielder Rafa Castillo flicked a header past the back line and into Lopez’s run, which the Cuban striker finished with a half-volley to score his 13th goal of the season and seventh for the club. The assist also marked Castillo’s first of the campaign.

The Alamo City club was then reduced to 10 men when midfielder Pecka was ejected from the match after being shown his second yellow card of the night in the 52nd minute.

With the result, SAFC remains in 10th place in the standings just above the playoff line pending results around the league over the weekend. The club will continue its push for the USL Championship Playoffs on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. as the team visits Tulsa Roughnecks FC at ONEOK Field.
