San Antonio FC will host the defending league champions Real Monarchs SLC on March 7 at Toyota Field in the club’s 2020 USL Championship season opener, the league announced today. The game will kick-off at 7:30 p.m. and marks the second consecutive year that SAFC will begin the regular season at Toyota Field.

Fans can currently purchase a two-game bundle that includes the home opener against Real Monarchs SLC and the upcoming preseason friendly against FC Dallas (MLS) on Feb. 12. The bundle – along with SAFC season tickets — can be purchased at www.sanantoniofc.com or by calling or texting 210-444-5657. Individual game tickets for the rest of the 2020 season will go on sale at a later date.

Originally drafted in the third round (49th overall) by the Crew in the 2017 MLS SuperDraft, Maloney has made 15 first-team appearances in all competitions with Columbus. In addition, Maloney has also spent time on loan with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (USLC) in both the 2017 and 2018 seasons. 

Following his 2018 season in Columbus, Maloney was named the winner of the club’s Kirk Urso Heart Award, which is awarded to the Crew player that best exemplifies the qualities in a teammate and becomes 'the heart' in the club's locker room. The award is named after the late Urso who played as a midfielder for the Crew in 2012.

Enriquez joins the Alamo City club after spending the previous two seasons with San Antonio’s rivals RGV FC. From 2018-19 with the Toros, Enriquez appeared in 61 league matches, making 49 starts while recording 4,625 minutes played, 10 goals, nine assists and 85 key passes. Enriquez recorded one key pass per 54 minutes played over the course of his two seasons in RGV, and the 22-year-old led the Toros in both goals (six) and assists (six) in the 2018 season.

Gorskie joins SAFC after spending parts of the 2019 season with Loudoun United in the USL Championship, and Thisted FC in the Danish second division. Gorskie made 13 appearances with Thisted prior to joining Loudon for the tail end of the 2019 season where he made six appearances and won 20 duels.

After making two appearances with the San Jose Earthquakes reserves in 2013, Gorskie signed his first professional contract with the New York Cosmos (NASL) the same year. In three seasons with the Cosmos from 2013-15, the 28-year-old made 46 league appearances while compiling 3,350 minutes played and winning two NASL championships (2013, 2015). Following his time with the Cosmos, Gorskie spent two seasons with Polish club Miedz Legnica from 2015-17 before returning to the United States and joining the Tampa Bay Rowdies in the USL Championship. The defender spent two seasons with the Rowdies, with his most successful coming in 2018 where he served as a team captain and appeared in a team-high 34 matches, compiling 2,904 minutes played and scoring two goals.

Prior to his time with Pacific, the 28-year-old spent parts of two seasons with FC Cincinnati in both Major League Soccer and the USL Championship. In 2018, Smith appeared in 32 USL Championship matches with Cincinnati, compiling 2,700 minutes while helping his side earn the 2018 Regular Season Championship.

Originally drafted by the Montreal Impact in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Smith made over 35 appearances with the Impact and their reserves over the course of two seasons in all competitions. The defender also spent time with Indy Eleven on loan in his early career before joining Swiss club Yverdon-Sport where he made 14 appearances and scored four goals in 2015. Prior to joining FC Cincinnati in 2018, Smith spent two seasons with Miami FC in the NASL where he compiled 4,588 minutes played in 61 total appearances while adding nine assists. Smith was touring the stadium after he signed a contract to join San Antonio FC for the 2020 USL Championship season, but the kicker was that the Boerne, Texas native was finally returning home to play for his hometown club.

Smith joins the Alamo City club as it enters a relatively new era under newly appointed head coach Alen Marcina. After getting the job earlier this month, Marcina immediately began the search process for the 2020 SAFC roster, and after the formality of exercising a couple of options, Marcina made sure to bring in Smith – a top target to play on the left side of defense next season.

After seeing him play live as a professional maybe once or twice a year, Smith’s family will now plan to be at every SAFC home match in 2020. That is huge for him.

“It’s something that everyone dreams of happening when they are professionals and it’s not always possible,” said Smith. “For me to be able to be close to family and also have them at every home match is very special. I’m over the moon and happy to play at home, and my family is going to be delighted to be at home matches this year.”

Smith is clearly well traveled in his professional days, living in new cities and countries that some would hope to accomplish in a lifetime. Coming back to San Antonio, he notices the strides the soccer landscape in the city has taken since he originally left in 2009. While on his way to being named the San Antonio Express-News Player of the Year in 2009, Smith played for Boerne Champion High School and played his club soccer with Classics Elite. Back then, there was no club attached to a professional team, and the now fully funded SAFC Pro Academy was a pipe dream at best.

“The facilities here are some of the best I’ve seen, definitely at the USL level, but even at the MLS level some of the facilities aren’t as nice as this,” Smith remarked. “Nowadays, these kids have some advantage to play in this environment and learn under these circumstances and coaches. I am definitely jealous we didn’t have this when I was growing up here and playing club soccer.”

FC Dallas were also runners-up in the 2010 MLS Cup as well as the 2005 and 2007 editions of the Open Cup.

San Antonio FC defender Ebenezer Ackon will return in 2020 after the club exercised his contract option, the team announced today. Per club policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"As a staff, we are delighted to welcome back Ebenezer,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “He is committed to our club, culture, and community and meets the on-field performance expectation being among league leaders in various statistical categories. We look forward to developing his game further as he has the potential to progress to the next level."

Ackon appeared in 33 games for San Antonio FC in his rookie season, compiling 2,970 minutes played which ranked second on the team. His 2,970 minutes played are second all-time in SAFC single-season history behind Kai Greene who recorded 3,060 in 2019. In addition, Ackon led SAFC in duels (431) and duels won (278), while finishing second on the team in blocks (21), interceptions (47), tackles won (54) and aerial duels won (82). Ackon’s 278 duels won ranked second in the league and first in the Western Conference despite attempting just the 14th most duels in the USL Championship.  

The defender also added an assist and was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week (May 14) once over the course of his first professional season.

“It’s a great honor to be a part of this family for the 2020 season,” Ackon said. “I’m very thankful to SAFC and everyone who has contributed to my professional journey. I can’t wait to get back to business and achieve great things with the team this season.”

Ackon originally joined SAFC after playing collegiate soccer at Bowling Green State University from 2017-18. Following his college career, Ackon was drafted by the Chicago Fire in the third round (53rd overall) of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft but went on to sign for SAFC. Following his 2018 season with the Falcons, the 22-year-old was named to the All-MAC First Team while also being named to the All-Ohio Team.

Born in Ghana, the 23-year-old began playing for Bowling Green State in 2017 after receiving eligibility from the NCAA. The rookie also attended the University of Cape Coast in his home country before moving to the United States.
