San Antonio FC has added defender Bradley Dildy to the roster pending league and federation approval, the team announced today. The player’s registration with SAFC as a USL Academy Player allows him to play in competitive matches without potentially jeopardizing future college eligibility.

“As a staff, we are thrilled for Bradley to join the first team,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “Bradley has excelled with our academy and has maximized his earned opportunities with the first team. Bradley has a fantastic future ahead of him and demonstrates the skill set to be a dominant left-back.”

Dildy recently became the 10th SAFC Pro Academy product to make a first-team appearance in either an Open Cup, USL Championship or exhibition match. Dildy played in both matches of the SAFC International Showcase against Pumas UNAM and Queretaro of Liga MX, playing 135 minutes and recording one assist. Dildy (birth year 2004) joined the SAFC Pro Academy in its inception in 2016, playing at every level within the program prior to making his first-team debut.

As of this season, San Antonio FC has had six Pro Academy products make their USL Championship debuts since 2018, including Ethan Bryant, Jose Gallegos, Carson Price, Leo Torres, Fabrizio Bernal and Josh Ramsey. Overall, SAFC has had 15 academy products appear in first-team matches in all competitions and international club exhibitions to date. The SAFC Pro Academy currently features over 100 full-time players, while the club’s Elite Training Program further expands the footprint of the club’s youth player development initiatives by focusing on the assimilation of pre-academy players into the club through collaboration with the local soccer community.

Despite the 2-4 loss for the club, SAFC once again put in an impressive performance, holding a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes to go with a mix of first-team and SAFC Pro Academy players.

This week the city of San Antonio got to see a total club identity. I'm incredibly proud of everybody. A lot of work has been put in from players, staff and front office, and to be able to demonstrate that club identity this week is something we'll remember forever, continue to build and continue to get better."

SAFC once again started the better side and opened the scoring 10th minute. A great pass from Emil Cuello slipped in Marcus Epps behind the defense before the midfielder sent a low pass across the face of goal that was finished by Nathan. The goal marked Nathan’s second in the International Showcase and second in as many games. After conceding three minutes later to level the score 1-1, SAFC took the lead again from a corner kick in the 23rd minute when Cuello’s cross found Jasser Khmiri who headed home for the goal.  

The Alamo City club make nine changes at halftime, including SAFC Pro Academy player Angel Bernal who became the 15th overall player from the academy to make a first-team appearance. SAFC held the 2-1 lead into the 76th minute before fresh legs from the Liga MX side were able to score three goals in the final quarter hour of the match.

San Antonio FC will return to league play with a road match in Colorado Springs against the Switchbacks on Saturday, July 17. SAFC will then return home on July 21 for a home match against New Mexico United on ESPN2.

San Antonio FC welcomed Queretaro FC to Toyota Field in the first match of the 2021 SAFC International Showcase on Tuesday night. Despite falling 2-4 to the storied Liga MX side, both SAFC first-team and academy players put in an impressive performance over the course of 90 minutes.

"It was a fantastic opportunity to play a top team from Mexico,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “I'm incredibly proud of the guys as a collective. Our academy players earned the opportunity to be a part of this game and performed very well. Our current contracted players also stepped up and played very well, while different players took up leadership roles and as a collective, they performed."

SAFC started the brightest in the game and opened the scoring in the 25th minute. A counter-press from Ethan Bryant forced a turnover that Nathan picked up and dribbled into the opposing box. The Brazilian then found midfielder Ollie Wright in the box who slotted home for the lead. Queretaro equalized just two minutes later through Joe Gallardo, but the teams would only be even for the three following minutes. After a great pass from SAFC Pro Academy player Bradley Dildy, Nathan connected and slotted the Alamo City club’s second goal past the keeper for the 2-1 lead.

Starting with an unlucky own goal in the 69th minute, SAFC would then concede two more late goals with less than 10 minutes to go in the game, making the scoreline more dramatic than the SAFC performance deserved. Impressive performances from the SAFC Pro Academy players along with first-teamers like Emil Cuello, Shandon Hopeau and Ethan Bryant were the story of the night.

The loss marked the club’s first at home since Aug. 3, 2019, ending an 18-game unbeaten streak at home for the club in the regular season. The match also marked the club’s return to full capacity at Toyota Field since March 2020, with 6,243 fans in attendance.

“Tonight, was an amazing atmosphere, our fans were incredible like they always are,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “I thought our guys performed very well, so this is difficult to accept. Like every game, we created a number of clean cut opportunities. We have to execute plain and simple. We have created more than enough to get the three points.”

The lone goal of the match came in just the second minute after midfielder Alasanne Diouf finished off a cross from just inside the SAFC box to give the visitors the early lead. The Bold then went down to 10 men in the 60th minute after forward Sean Okoli was shown a red card for a hard challenge on goalkeeper Matthew Cardone. SAFC was unable to find the equalizer despite outshooting the opponents 21-12 and creating 19 chances compared to their 10. 

SAFC Pro Academy product Leo Torres made his second appearance of the season on the night, recording one shot, 13 touches on the ball and a 78 percent passing accuracy. The match also marked 17-year-old goalkeeper Daniel DeGuzman’s first inclusion in the in the game day roster. DeGuzman and Torres are both original members of the inaugural SAFC Pro Academy 2004 age group which launched the program in 2016.

SAFC will return to action on Tuesday July 6 as the club hosts Liga MX side Queretaro FC at 7:30 p.m., and again on Friday, July 9 at 7:30 p.m. as the team hosts Pumas UNAM. Both matches are part of the first-ever SAFC International Showcase.

San Antonio FC (2-2-6) tied Real Monarchs SLC (1-5-3) on Saturday night, earning a road point away to a division rival. SAFC forward Justin Dhillon scored his second goal in as many games while midfielder Ollie Wright recorded his second assist in the tie.   

“It’s positive to get a point on the road, it’s never easy playing from home,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “We created more than enough opportunities to earn the three points. Collectively, we need to do a better job executing. We believe and trust the process, and soon we will be executing and turning those ties into wins. All we can do now is learn, grown and get ready for our upcoming opponent.”

Real Monarchs SLC forced Matthew Cardone into some impressive saves early on, and eventually took the lead in 39th minute when Douglas Martinez was found with a quick free-kick before burying his one v. one. SAFC pressured the Monarchs goal before the halftime whistle but failed to level the score before the break.

SAFC were the better side in the second 45, creating chances to get back into the game before finally equalizing through Dhillon in the 77th minute. A great through ball from Wright found the forward who scored past the on-rushing keeper.

Dhillon was named the SWBC Man of the Match after his goal along with four shots, three shots on target and two key passes. SAFC defender Mathieu Deplagne made his return to the starting lineup after returning from injury, and midfielder Cam Lindley recorded a team-high five key passes in the match.
