San Antonio FC (8-9-7) will host New Mexico United (8-6-10) at Toyota Field on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. The match marks the first time the USL expansion side visits the Alamo City as SAFC looks to earn its first win against the club.

San Antonio FC is coming off a 2-2 draw against rivals RGV FC. Goals from Jack Barmby and Cristian Parano helped SAFC continue to pick up valuable points. Since June 8, San Antonio has recorded the fifth-highest number of points in the Western Conference (19).

Despite the draw, the Alamo City club will look to continue building on recent performances after scoring 11 goals in their last four outings. SAFC has only recorded two losses at Toyota Field this season and will look to return to the win column at home.

New Mexico will look to earn their first win since July 31. The club has posted a 0-1-2 record in their last three matches and currently find themselves in seventh place in the Western Conference standings. SAFC previously fell to New Mexico United 0-3 on the road on May 5, however the club has posted a 4-1-2 clip and a +9 goal differential when facing opponents for the second time this season.

SAFC will embark on a two-game road trip following the match against New Mexico and will look to capitalize on points at home.

Saturday’s match will include a postgame concert by local Selena tribute band Bidi Bidi Banda, during which fans can enjoy $1 beer and sodas courtesy of Bud Light.

A soccer club is made up of a lot of elements. Between the coaches, the players, the staff and the surrounding pieces, each element is vital to the success of a club both on and off the field. However, probably the most integral element remains the fans. The fans are the heartbeat of the club – the engine that drives a club forward. San Antonio has been fortunate to have fans and supporters that are passionate, educated in the game, loyal and most of all – loud.

The week leading up to San Antonio’s match against New Mexico United has been donned “Supporters Week” by the USL Championship. It is only fitting that SAFC plays a home match at Toyota Field during the aforementioned week, seeing as how a packed Alamo City stadium is as good as any example of passionate fans and supporters in the entire league. San Antonio FC fans’ efforts certainly don’t go unnoticed from the club’s perspective. SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell continues to be amazed at the club support in his fourth year at the helm of SAFC.

“When our fans are in full voice in our stadium, it is the best atmosphere in the USL,” said Powell. “They get behind the team and it creates positive energy. We want to make sure as a club we send everyone in that building home with a smile on their face week in and week out.”

Match day is where the relationships with the fans and club really reaches a climax. And its not just at Toyota Field. Powell and the SAFC players continued to be awe struck at the traveling support from SAFC fans since the club’s inception in 2016.  

“When we are on the road and our fans are there, you always want to try and engage with them personally to get that personal touch,” said Powell. “It’s all very important and it means the world to us.”

Fans have planned entire vacations around the San Antonio FC road schedule, and Powell mentions it never goes unnoticed. It gives the team a lift to see their faces in the crowd on the road, and it is something that continues to be special for staff and players alike, especially in unfamiliar territory.  

Whether it is at home or on the road, at Toyota Field or in the local San Antonio community, or on match day or not; SAFC and the soccer community in the Alamo City continues to grow their special relationship. The fans continue to make an impact on and off the field and SAFC expects that to continue with an important match against New Mexico this weekend. Powell knows what to expect from here on out.

San Antonio FC (8-9-7) tied Rio Grande Valley FC (6-11-7) 2-2 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. Two goals in the first half from midfielders Jack Barmby and Cristian Parano earned the club a point at home in the South Texas Derby.

“It was two different halves of soccer,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “It looked like we were in control of the game, but fair play to them. RGV kept working and kept pushing themselves to the final whistle.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the 14th minute when defender Moises Hernandez found Barmby at the top of the box with a pass, which the England native struck with the outside of the foot off the first tough and beat goalkeeper Nicholas Corti far-post for the 1-0 lead. The goal marked Barmby’s seventh of the season while the assist marked Hernandez’s second on the year.

RGV FC went down to 10 men in the 30th minute after defender Alejandro Fuenmayor tackled forward Frank Lopez on a potential one-on-one breakaway.

The Alamo City club then doubled its lead just before the halftime whistle when midfielder Walter Restrepo found Parano near the top of the box, from where the Argentinian chipped Corti for the second SAFC goal of the night and the midfielder’s fifth of the season and third in two matches. The assist also marked Restrepo’s fifth of the campaign and third in two matches.

RGV FC narrowed the gap in the 75th minute when Carlos Small scored a header following a corner kick before the Toros equalized by way of an own goal from defender Ebenezer Ackon just five minutes later.

San Antonio FC will return to USL Championship action at Toyota Field on Saturday, Aug. 24 as they host New Mexico United at 7:30 p.m.

The United Soccer League and COPA90 have teamed up to introduce the inaugural edition of “Supporters Week”, a seven-day celebration of the communities and fanbases across the USL Championship.   Beginning Saturday, August 17 through Saturday, August 24, USL clubs will pay homage to fans through a league-wide initiative as Championship clubs transform their social profiles, highlight the incredible supporter stories around the league, and showcase fan-generated content. As the week unfolds, fans will also have a unique opportunity to interact with club and league social channels, contribute to the league website, and provide supporter-centric photos and videos to be shared across USL Championship’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram platforms.   In addition, clubs across the Championship will provide fans the opportunity to interactively impact an element of their in-stadium experience, including the use of social and app-based polling to determine which kit their team will wear, cleat styles, drink specials, goalkeeper glove colors, names on the back of jerseys, warmup music, and more. “For a lot of our clubs, every week is supporter’s week,” said USL Vice President of Communications Ryan Madden. “But from a USL HQ perspective, we wanted to find a cool, unique way to say thank you. The reality is our league doesn’t exist without the fans so the least we can do is to creatively engage, empower, and work to see the league more clearly through their eyes. And to have a partner like COPA90, whose mission it is to celebrate soccer fans across the world, is perfect.”   Off the field, the USL and COPA90 have also partnered with seven Championship clubs on a limited-edition apparel line dubbed the “Supporters Collection”. The capsule collection – set to drop early next week –  will feature new minimalist marks, designed in tandem with the clubs and their supporters. The first of two regional qualifying weekends, October’s Academy Cup group stage games will see teams at the U-17 level compete with San Antonio FC hosting Orange County SC to kick things off, kickoff set for 3:00 p.m. CT.

The 21-game slate will run through Monday, October 14 with three noon kickoffs between OKC Energy FC-USL Omaha, El Paso Locomotive FC-Ventura County Fusion, and Tulsa Roughnecks FC-San Francisco Glens FC closing out the long weekend.

San Antonio FC (8-9-6) beat Reno 1868 FC (13-6-5) 4-1 on Saturday night. A brace from midfielder Cristian Parano and goals from forward Frank Lopez and midfielder Jack Barmby gave the Alamo City club its first win at Greater Nevada Field.

“We’re extremely proud of our players and staff for the accumulation of work throughout the week,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Everyone was focused on Saturday night. I thought we started the game with good intensity and on the front foot, and we got the first goal which is always very important, and the guys saw the game out in the end.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the 12th minute when midfielder Walter Restrepo found Parano with a pass near midfield. The Argentinian turned and dribbled into space before firing a powerful strike past goalkeeper James Marcinowski for the 1-0 lead. Parano scored his second of the night just before the halftime whistle after Pecka laid off the ball near midfield. Again, the 19-year-old dribbled his way into the box and placed a shot far-post to double the lead.

The hosts went down to 10 men in the 50th minute after midfielder Eric Calvillo received his second yellow card of the night following a hard tackle on Pecka. SAFC then scored its third goal of the night, this time by way of Lopez after Pecka picked a defender’s pocket and found the Cuban striker, who dribbled past two defenders before beating Marcinowski with a hard, low shot.

SAFC struck again just two minutes later after Restrepo made a run down the flank with a wall-pass from Lopez and squared the ball to Barmby inside the box, from where the England native turned and finished to make it 4-0. Reno narrowed the gap in the 71st minute with a goal from Sam Gleadle following a corner kick, but were unable to find the back of the net again.

With the win, SAFC is now in ninth place in the Western Conference. The Alamo City club will return to USL Championship action on Saturday, Aug. 17 as the team hosts Rio Grande Valley FC at Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
