San Antonio FC (9-10-7) will travel to face Phoenix Rising FC (19-2-5) at Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 9:30 p.m. CT. The match marks the ninth matchup between the two teams overall as SAFC looks to earn three important points for their playoff push.

SAFC heads into the match after falling to Tacoma Defiance last weekend. The Alamo City club will look to get back in the winning column after amassing 17 goals scored in their previous six matches, which are led by midfielder and August USL Championship Player of the Month contender Cristian Parano’s five goals during that month.

The Alamo City club finds itself in 11th place in the Western Conference standings, and could potentially jump into seventh place pending results around the league should the team earn three points to snap Phoenix Rising FC’s historic 17-game winning streak, which has kept them in first place in the West while making them the first club to clinch a playoff spot in the USL Championship.

SAFC is 4-2-2 all-time against Rising FC, most recently playing to a thrilling 3-3 draw at Toyota Field in the teams’ season opener on March 9. The Alamo City club will also look to build on their 1-2-0 record when facing Phoenix on the road.

Following the match at Phoenix, SAFC will return to Toyota Field as they host OKC Energy FC prior to embarking on another two-game road trip at LA Galaxy II and Tulsa Roughnecks FC.

San Antonio FC (9-10-7) fell 1-5 to Tacoma Defiance (5-15-5) at Cheney Stadium on Saturday night in their first of two consecutive matches on the road, ending a three-game unbeaten streak for the club.

“It’s a tough result tonight,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “Tacoma delivered a good performance for 90 minutes and we couldn’t match it. The most important thing at this time is the response for everybody in preparation for next Saturday’s match.”

Tacoma opened the scoring in the 17th minute after midfielder Shandon Hopeau stole the ball in SAFC’s defensive third and found Justin Dhillon inside the box for a tap-in. The hosts doubled their lead in the 29th minute after midfielder Danny Robles finished off a breakaway, giving the hosts a 2-0 advantage by halftime.

The Defiance added their third goal of the night in the 75th minute when midfielder Alfonso Ocampo-Chavez converted from the penalty spot before midfielder Ethan Dobbelaere scored their fourth of the night following a breakaway.

SAFC pulled one back in the 88th minute after Josh Yaro buried a pass from Jack Barmby. The goal marked Yaro’s first professional goal, while Barmby tallied his fourth assist in USL Championship play this season. Tacoma then added their fifth of the night after Dhillon scored from the top of the box to make it 1-5.

San Antonio FC will return to USL Championship action on Saturday, Sept. 7 as the team travels to take on Phoenix Rising FC at 9:30 p.m. CT.

San Antonio FC will face Tacoma after earning their biggest win in club history last Saturday vs. New Mexico United. The 5-0 victory marked the most goals scored by SAFC since their inception and also marked the 50th league win for the team and head coach Darren Powell. Tacoma carried a 2-1 lead into the last 10 minutes of the game before allowing three unanswered Phoenix goals to fall 4-2 to the Arizona club. Despite their place in the standings, Tacoma – who are the USL Championship affiliate of the Seattle Sounders – have earned all four of their wins at home in front of the friendly crowd.

In their previous meeting this season, San Antonio defeated Tacoma 3-0 on April 26 at Toyota Field. Two goals from Jack Barmby helped seal the points for the Alamo City club as they earned their fifth win all-time against Tacoma, which is tied for the most against a single USL opponent in team history. SAFC defeated Tacoma 3-0 in their first ever league match on April 3, 2016 back when the Defiance were branded as the Seattle Sounders FC 2.

San Antonio FC midfielder Cristian Parano was named the USL Championship Player of the Week, the league announced today. Parano scored two goals and recorded two assists in the record 5-0 win for SAFC over New Mexico United last Saturday.

The Argentinian midfielder was named the SWBC Man of the Match after recording the two goals and two assists while also adding five key passes and six successful dribbles. Parano continues to add to his August Player of the Month candidacy after tallying five goals, two assists, 15 key passes, 19 successful dribbles, 36 duels won and an 86.4 percent passing accuracy in four August matches thus far.

Overall this season, the 19-year-old has appeared in all 25 league matches for SAFC, making 17 starts and tallying 1,607 minutes played. Parano has scored seven goals while adding the two assists, 39 chances created, 84 successful dribbles and 176 duels won. The 20-year-old’s 84 successful dribbles and 137 dribbles attempted lead the USL Championship in 2019.

The honor marks the fifth time a San Antonio FC player has earned the Player of the Week award and second time for Parano in the last three weeks. Goalkeeper Matthew Cardone (2016), forward Cesar Elizondo (2017) and forward Ever Guzman (2017) are the other three to earn the league honor. SAFC has had one USL Championship Player of the Month winner in team history after midfielder Billy Forbes earned the award following his play in March/April of 2017.

The United Soccer League (USL) announced a new three-year rights agreement with ESPN on Tuesday that features the USL Championship and League One matches through the 2022 season.

The new agreement will see a three-fold rise in the number of games televised annually on ESPN’s networks, including the addition of Spanish-language telecasts on ESPN Deportes, as well as continued expansive coverage on ESPN+, the leading multi-sport, direct-to-consumer video service.

“We are thrilled to continue with ESPN and ESPN+,” said USL Executive Vice President Court Jeske. “USL is an organization that aims to put the fans first and we know that supporters across the country will be very pleased with this new three-year agreement and the exposure it brings.”  

The relationship between the USL and ESPN will enter its fifth full year in 2020 as the league celebrates its 10th anniversary season. Under the new agreement, 18 regular-season games from the Championship will air on ESPN2, ESPNEWS, ESPNU or ESPN Deportes annually in addition to the USL Championship Final. All other matches will be streamed live on ESPN+.

“We’re delighted to continue our relationship with the United Soccer League, and showcase the USL Championship and USL League One competitions across ESPN networks and ESPN+ through this new agreement,” said Scott Guglielmino, ESPN Senior Vice President, Programming and Acquisitions.  

The Championship has grown through its relationship with ESPN and ESPN+, including the debut of League One during the inaugural year of ESPN+. This new agreement will see nearly triple the content on ESPN networks, including ESPN Deportes, helping the USL and its clubs continue to broaden their fanbase.

USL will continue to be featured among the portfolio of world-class domestic and international soccer on ESPN+, along with Major League Soccer, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, Italy’s Serie A, the F.A. Cup, the English Football League, and the qualifiers for the UEFA 2020 European Championship. In 2019, more than 750 regular season contests across the USL Championship and USL League One will air on ESPN platforms.

Games will continue to be produced by USL Productions, the league’s state-of-the-art broadcast production, broadcast and distribution facilities with VISTA Worldlink in south Florida.

San Antonio FC midfielder Ethan Bryant has joined Belgian club K.S.V. Roeselare on a permanent deal, the club announced today. The SAFC product makes the move after originally joining the Alamo City club as an Elite Training Program player in early 2017. Per club policy, terms of the move were not disclosed.

“We want to thank Ethan for all of his efforts over the last couple of years,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He is a wonderful character and a very good player with a bright future ahead of him. Ethan has benefitted from getting very valuable minutes with the first team, and we are extremely proud of him coming from San Antonio and through our Elite Training Program.  Ethan is the first of many young players to get opportunities within the SAFC first-team, and we look forward to many more from our growing SAFC Pro Academy. We wish Ethan and his family all the best on this new adventure and we look forward to following his career.”

In his time with SAFC, Bryant appeared in 16 USL Championship matches tallying 1,225 minutes while adding two goals and three assists. The San Antonio native also played in two Open Cup matches with SAFC over the course of the last two seasons. Bryant – who also played for Brandeis High School and Classics Elite locally – was originally identified by San Antonio FC after participating in the club’s Elite Training Program prior to being added to the first-team roster as a USL Academy player in February of 2018. The midfielder made his debut for SAFC at age 16, which marked the youngest SAFC player to make a competitive appearance at the time.

Following the move, the San Antonio FC active roster currently stands at 23.

In his time with SAFC, Bryant appeared in 16 USL Championship matches tallying 1,225 minutes while adding two goals and three assists. The San Antonio native also played in two Open Cup matches with SAFC over the course of the last two seasons. Bryant – who also played for Brandeis High School and Classics Elite locally – was originally identified by San Antonio FC after participating in the club’s Elite Training Program prior to being added to the first-team roster as a USL Academy player in February of 2018. The midfielder made his debut for SAFC at age 16, which marked the youngest SAFC player to make a competitive appearance at the time.

Following the move, the San Antonio FC active roster currently stands at 23.

San Antonio FC (9-9-7) beat New Mexico United (8-7-10) 5-0 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. A brace from Cristian Parano and goals from Brian Gomez, Frank Lopez, and Walter Restrepo earned the club its biggest win in franchise history as well as the team’s 50th all-time win in USL Championship play.

“This week we learned a lesson from last weekend, which I thought was very important,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “Our players made sure they applied themselves in the second half and now we need to make sure we get ready and prepare ourselves for the road trip next Friday.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Restrepo found Parano just inside the box, from where the midfielder cut past a defender and buried it past goalkeeper Cody Mizell for the 1-0 lead.

The Alamo City club double its lead just 11 minutes later after Parano played Gomez out on the wing. The Argentinian dribbled into the box and fired a powerful, low shot to the far-post to make it 2-0.

Forward Frank Lopez then added the third of the night in the 56th minute after Parano dribbled down midfield and played him in with a through-ball which the striker finished to score his 11th goal of the season. Restrepo then found a goal of his own after a pass from Jack Barmby found him inside the box from where he slotted the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-0. Parano then concluded the night with his second goal of the game from a long-range strike in the 90th minute off an assist from midfielder Michael Lahoud.

Following tonight’s match, Parano has scored seven goals and recorded four assists on the season, with five of his goals coming in his last three matches. Meanwhile, Restrepo scored his first goal in league play while recording his sixth assist of the season, with four coming in the previous three matches as well. Barmby recorded his third assist of the season and fifth in all competitions, while Lahoud recorded his first assist for the club.

San Antonio FC will return to USL Championship action on Friday, August 30 as the club visits Tacoma Defiance at 9 p.m. CT in the first of two consecutive away matches.
