San Antonio FC has added defenders Jacob Castro, Josh Ramsey and Sebastian Mercado, as well as midfielder Rocky Perez and forward Fabrizio Bernal to the roster pending league and federation approval, the team announced today.  The players’ registration with SAFC as USL Academy Players allows them to play in competitive matches without potentially jeopardizing future college eligibility.

“As a club, we believe strongly in development, progression and competition,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “These players have earned opportunities with the first team and have demonstrated the character and performance to contribute to the environment. This developmental process we know will allow for each player to have a positive impact on the culture and performance of San Antonio FC.”

Perez, Castro, Mercado and Bernal are all members of the SAFC Pro Academy, while Ramsey comes to SAFC from Solar SC in Dallas. Mercado and Bernal joined the academy in 2019 while Perez originally joined in 2017. Castro has been with the Pro Academy since its inception. All five players have appeared in preseason matches for San Antonio FC this season. Both Perez and Ramsey have received United States Youth National Team call-ups so far in their young careers.

“It is extremely important for us to be able to provide integrative opportunities for players from our Pro Academy and players who have been identified thru our Talent ID Department,” said SAFC Academy Director and Assistant Coach Nick Evans. “These young players are at different integrated stages with the professional team but have each shown that they can contribute to the squad and we look forward to their development over the next USL Championship season.”

48 – SAFC enters a new era under Alen Marcina, but this certainly isn’t the new coach’s first rodeo. Marcina has accumulated 48 wins in all competitions as a head coach while also winning an NASL Championship in 2014, and a USL League Two regular season championship in 2018.

We also found some learning opportunities on things we must clean up, like giving away three set-piece goals that came from good finishes from RGV. We thank them for making the trip to San Antonio today and we now start preparing for the Monarchs next week.”

Partain scored his goal from a strong header after forward Luis Solignac got down the right flank and put a pinpoint cross in. SAFC nearly doubled the lead a minute later when Jesus Enriquez was fouled for a penalty, but Solignac sent the spot kick over the bar.

RGV equalized with 10 minutes to go in the half, capitalizing on a free ball after a set piece. The Toros took the lead with another goal from a set piece before scoring the third from a direct free kick into the far post.

San Antonio FC today announced that forward Jose Gallegos has been signed to a multi-year professional contract, pending league and federation approval. Gallegos was originally a member of the SAFC roster on a USL Academy player agreement after he first joined in April of 2019. Per club policy, specific terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“We are very excited to add San Antonio native Jose Gallegos as a full-time professional to San Antonio FC,” said Marcina. “Jose has consistently demonstrated through his earned opportunities that he can be a dominant attacking player in the league and has an endless ceiling of potential. As a technical staff, our focus is to ensure we are developing Jose every day so he can improve and elevate his game that allows him to be successful for SAFC and beyond.”

Gallegos made his SAFC debut last season in the U.S. Open Cup second round at home against the Laredo Heat, coming on in the second half as San Antonio progressed to the third round. The 18-year-old would go on to appear in 14 league matches (600 minutes) while recording a goal, assist and 11 chances created in 2019.

The San Antonio native has been involved in the SAFC first team environment since 2018 having previously participated in the club’s Elite Training Program. Gallegos has played local club soccer with Classic Elite Soccer Club, while also attending and playing for Central Catholic High School. While with Central, Gallegos served as team captain and won four straight TAPPS State Championships

“I’m looking forward to continuing on my path to become the best player I can be,” said Gallegos. “I’m very grateful to San Antonio FC and the staff for the continued opportunity. I want to make my family proud and give back to them for all their sacrifices. This is the beginning of something special.”

San Antonio FC narrowly fell to Orlando City SC (MLS) 1-2 on the road in preseason action on Friday night. A goal from Callum Montgomery capped off a strong performance from SAFC despite the final scoreline.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to play against a very good MLS squad who are a week away from their first game of the season,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “It was a great opportunity for us to grow and continue to build on our identity.”

Orlando scored the winner with a curling shot into the top corner in the 62nd minute to earn the preseason victory.

San Antonio FC has signed defender Mitchell Taintor for the 2020 USL Championship season pending league and federation approval, the team announced today. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

"As a staff, we are excited to welcome Mitchell Taintor to the SAFC family,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “Mitchell is an experienced USL defender with great on-field communication. His characteristics as a person and player match our team’s culture and strategy."

Taintor joins SAFC after spending the previous two seasons with the Sacramento Republic in the USL Championship. In 2019, Taintor appeared in 31 matches combined between the regular season and playoffs, making 28 starts and recording 2,561 minutes played. The 25-year-old added two goals and two assists to go along with a team-leading 115 clearances and 86 aerial duels won. Overall in his two seasons with the Republic, Taintor made 64 appearances (61 starts) between the regular season and playoffs, amassing 5,373 minutes played while adding three goals, three assists, 258 clearances and 146 duels won.

In 2018, Taintor was also loaned to MLS side Toronto FC for one game where he started, played 90 minutes and scored a goal on his debut in a match against the Houston Dynamo.

“I’m very excited,” said Taintor. “The opportunity came up, and I’m excited that this is the city and club that wanted to have me. This has always been one of my favorite places to play while I was in Sacramento. It’s a great group, I believe in what is going on here and I’m looking forward to a good year.”

Originally drafted by Toronto FC in the third round (59th overall) of the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, Taintor signed with Toronto’s USL Championship affiliate where he made 47 appearances in two seasons from 2016-17. The Connecticut native was the club captain for Toronto FC II in 2017 and scored three goals for the Canadian side over the course of his time there.

Taintor attended Rutgers University and played collegiate soccer from 2012-15, making 73 appearances for the Scarlet Knights. From his time in college, the defender earned NSCAA Second Team All-Midwest Region and Second Team All-Big Ten Conference honors. While in college, Taintor played with USL League Two Sides Real Boston Rams and the Ocean City Nor’easters. The centerback is a product of the New England Revolution’s academy system.

Taintor will wear No. 20 for SAFC.

San Antonio FC fell to FC Dallas 2-3 at Toyota Field on Saturday night despite a strong showing from the Alamo City club. Goals from defender Connor Maloney and midfielder Jose Gallegos were not enough to earn a result after FC Dallas scored three late goals in quick succession.

“There were a lot of positives,” SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina said. “There were a lot of moments in which we made it difficult for a very good FC Dallas team. Our hope was to achieve our tactical and behavioral objectives, and I think the fans saw a taste of our team identity, and hopefully they’re excited to see what lies ahead.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the 66th minute after SAFC Pro Academy player Abraham Lincon drew a penalty shortly after coming into the match as a substitute, which Maloney converted from the spot to earn the lead.

The Alamo City club added their second goal of the night just six minutes later after Gallegos dribbled up the field and buried a shot far-post past goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez to make it 2-0.

FC Dallas then pulled off the comeback win after scoring three goals in the final six minutes of the match from midfielders Ricardo Pepi and Michael Barrios as well as a late-winner from defender Reto Ziegler. The two sides then played an additional 30-minute scrimmage which ended in a 1-0 win for FC Dallas.

Three SAFC Pro Academy players were able to see game action in the second half with Lincon, Sebastian Mercado and Fabricio Bernal earning minutes. SAFC and FC Dallas ended the night with a 30-minute scrimmage following the 90-minute preseason match.

SAFC will return to preseason action as the team travels to face MLS side Orlando City SC on Friday, Feb. 21.

San Antonio FC fell to FC Dallas 2-3 at Toyota Field on Saturday night despite a strong showing from the Alamo City club. Goals from defender Connor Maloney and midfielder Jose Gallegos were not enough to earn a result after FC Dallas scored three late goals in quick succession.

“There were a lot of positives,” SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina said. “There were a lot of moments in which we made it difficult for a very good FC Dallas team. Our hope was to achieve our tactical and behavioral objectives, and I think the fans saw a taste of our team identity, and hopefully they’re excited to see what lies ahead.”

SAFC opened the scoring in the 66th minute after SAFC Pro Academy player Abraham Lincon drew a penalty shortly after coming into the match as a substitute, which Maloney converted from the spot to earn the lead.

The Alamo City club added their second goal of the night just six minutes later after Gallegos dribbled up the field and buried a shot far-post past goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez to make it 2-0.

FC Dallas then pulled off the comeback win after scoring three goals in the final six minutes of the match from midfielders Ricardo Pepi and Michael Barrios as well as a late-winner from defender Reto Ziegler. The two sides then played an additional 30-minute scrimmage which ended in a 1-0 win for FC Dallas.

Three SAFC Pro Academy players were able to see game action in the second half with Lincon, Sebastian Mercado and Fabricio Bernal earning minutes. SAFC and FC Dallas ended the night with a 30-minute scrimmage following the 90-minute preseason match.

SAFC will return to preseason action as the team travels to face MLS side Orlando City SC on Friday, Feb. 21.

San Antonio FC has added goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair on loan from Minnesota United (MLS) for the 2020 USL Championship season pending league and federation approval, the team announced today. Per club policy, terms of the loan were not disclosed.

“As a staff, we are very excited to add Dayne St. Claire to the SAFC roster,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “We want to thank Adrian Heath and the entire Minnesota United FC organization for the loan. Dayne performed exceptionally in college and has tremendous potential to be a premier goalkeeper. He boasts the qualities we seek both on and off the field, and we are looking forward to working with him.”

St. Clair – a Generation Adidas athlete – was originally selected in the first round (seventh overall) of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft by Minnesota after a stellar college career at Maryland. St. Clair has one loan spell under his belt, making five appearances in 2019 with Forward Madison in ULS League One while keeping one clean sheet and recording five total saves.

The 22-year-old played four years at Maryland from 2015-18 where he led the Terrapins to the 2018 NCAA National Championship. While in college, the Canada native also played for USL League Two sides K-W United and the NY Red Bulls U-23’s.

“I’m really excited,” said St. Clair. “I think this is a good move for myself and the club, and I’m very excited to get started and defend 210.”

St. Clair will wear No. 97 for SAFC.
