San Antonio FC will open the 34-game USL Championship regular season at Toyota Field against Detroit City FC on March 12 followed by back-to-back road matches at LA Galaxy II on March 19 and rivals RGV FC on March 27. Overall, SAFC will host 17 unique opponents over the club’s 17 regular season home matches – 15 of which will occur on Saturday nights.

San Antonio FC will play each Western Conference team twice – one home and one away – with the exception of RGV FC who the club will face three times. San Antonio FC has signed midfielder David Loera pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“We are delighted to add David to the SAFC community,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “He is a dynamic and creative attacker who excels in one versus one attacking situations. David is very competitive, demonstrates a strong work ethic, and is a committed and ambitious professional who fits our team culture.”

Loera joins SAFC after spending the majority of the 2021 season on loan to Phoenix Rising from Orlando City SC. The 23-year-old appeared in 11 matches with Phoenix during the campaign, along with appearing in one match for Orlando in MLS. The midfielder has compiled 22 appearances with 600-plus minutes in his professional career so far.

Originally a member of the Orlando City SC development academy, Loera got his first taste of professional soccer with Orlando City B of the USL Championship in 2016 and 2017. After attending college for three seasons with North Carolina State, Loera returned to Orlando and signed a multi-year homegrown contract with the club prior to the 2020 season.

While with NC State, the midfielder made 57 appearances and scored nine goals from 2017-19. Loera was named both First Team and Second Team All-ACC during his time with the Wolfpack.

In his four seasons with the Fire, Collier has appeared in 54 matches (14 starts), compiling 1,750 minutes played to go with 42 shots. The 26-year-old also spent time on loan with USL Championship club Memphis 901 FC in 2019, appearing in 26 matches and adding six goals over the course of the campaign.

In 2019, Collier earned his first call-up to the full New Zealand Men’s National Team, making two appearances in international friendly matches against European sides Ireland and Lithuania.

San Antonio FC has acquired defender Mitchell Taintor via transfer from Sacramento Republic FC pending league and federation approval, the club announced today. Per team policy, terms of the transfer were not disclosed. In addition, Taintor has signed a new multi-year contract with SAFC.

The 27-year-old joined SAFC on loan from Sacramento in August of last season and made an immediate impact as the club charged through the end of the season and on to the Western Conference Finals. After joining San Antonio, Taintor started 13 matches in the regular season, compiling 1,147 minutes played and adding 12 tackles and an assist. The center-back also played every minute of all three postseason matches with SAFC. Overall, in all competitions with both San Antonio and Sacramento in 2021, Taintor made 28 appearances (24 starts), racking up 2,118 minutes played along with 25 tackles, one goal and two assists.

Taintor’s first stint in the Alamo City came in 2020 after the defender joined prior to the end of preseason. While with SAFC in 2020, the defender appeared in 15 of the club’s 16 regular season matches, compiling 1,470 minutes, 68 clearances, 42 aerial duels won and 23 interceptions. Taintor also played all 120 minutes of playoff competition for the team. Prior to 2020, the defender spent the previous two seasons with Sacramento. Overall, from 2018-19 with the Republic, he made 64 appearances (61 starts) between the regular season and playoffs, amassing 5,373 minutes played while adding three goals, three assists, 258 clearances and 146 duels won.

The veteran midfielder dominated the middle of the park and led all SAFC players with an 85.3 percent passing accuracy over his 18 matches (1,451 minutes played). In three postseason matches, Abu recorded a team-high 10 tackles and ranked second on the team with five key passes.

Prior to joining SAFC, the Ghanaian spent the 2020 season with DC United in MLS where he appeared in six matches. The veteran of 11 professional seasons, Abu has amassed over 200 appearances and 16,000 professional minutes since 2010 in MLS, La Liga in Spain and the Norwegian first division. In his most prolific stretch, he appeared in 54 matches (4,690 minutes) with Stromsgodset IF in Norway from 2015-16 before making 23 appearances (1,450 minutes) with the Columbus Crew in 2017. PC inspires his teammates to perform to the best of their abilities and be resilient through adversity."

PC appeared in 18 regular season matches in 2021, compiling 1,221 minutes played along with 29 tackles and 20 chances created. The Brazilian helped lead the Alamo City club to its third playoff appearance in team history along with its first-ever trip to the Western Conference Finals. Additionally, PC was an integral member of the SAFC roster in 2020, appearing 14 of the club’s 16 regular season matches, compiling 1,254 minutes played. In addition to his goal and two assists, PC jointly led SAFC in key passes (23) while ranking second on the club in tackles (39).

The 27-year-old originally joined SAFC after spending the 2017-19 seasons in Major League Soccer with the Vancouver Whitecaps and Orlando City SC, respectively. The midfielder made over 30 appearances combined between Orlando and Vancouver. He also made 45 appearances across parts of two seasons with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (NASL) before being sold to the Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) in the middle of the 2016 season. PC would go on to make 14 appearances for Tampa Bay while adding one goal and one assist to close the season for the Rowdies. Overall, the midfielder recorded nine goals and eight assists in 59 NASL matches with the two clubs.   

PC is a youth product of the famous Corinthians academy in his native Brazil and made his debut for the Corinthians B team in 2013. While with Corinthians, he also spent time on loan with Beleneses of the Portuguese first division.

San Antonio FC has announced its initial 2022 roster following the completion of the 2021 USL Championship season that saw SAFC advance to the Western Conference Final. Forwards Santiago Patino and Justin Dhillon, along with midfielders Jose Gallegos and Leo Torres are all currently under contract for the upcoming season.

Patino scored five goals in 11 regular season games in 2021 after missing a substantial portion of the season due to a lower body injury. The Colombian made a massive impact after returning and scored three playoff goals to help lead SAFC to the conference final. Dhillon scored seven goals and added three assists in 27 games in his first season with the club.

Gallegos was named a finalist for USL Championship Young Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, and the San Antonio native was also named to the All-League Second Team. Gallegos recorded seven goals and three assists in 29 games this season. Torres made six appearances for SAFC in 2021 before the SAFC Pro Academy graduate was loaned to Real Monarchs in September for the remainder of the USL Championship season.

In addition, the club is in ongoing discussions with numerous players – including from the 2021 roster — and will announce any further transactions when finalized.

Forwards Santiago Patino and Justin Dhillon, along with midfielders Jose Gallegos and Leo Torres are all currently under contract for the upcoming season.

Patino scored five goals in 11 regular season games in 2021 after missing a substantial portion of the season due to a lower body injury. The Colombian made a massive impact after returning and scored three playoff goals to help lead SAFC to the conference final. Dhillon scored seven goals and added three assists in 27 games in his first season with the club.

Gallegos was named a finalist for USL Championship Young Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, and the San Antonio native was also named to the All-League Second Team. Gallegos recorded seven goals and three assists in 29 games this season. Torres made six appearances for SAFC in 2021 before the SAFC Pro Academy graduate was loaned to Real Monarchs in September for the remainder of the USL Championship season.

In addition, the club is in ongoing discussions with numerous players – including from the 2021 roster — and will announce any further transactions when finalized.

The winner will be announced on Tuesday, Nov. 30.

The 20-year-old SAFC Pro Academy product recorded seven goals, three assists and 38 chances created while leading the league with 99 completed dribbles. Gallegos also won 233 duels defensively to rank seventh in the league overall with a +9.14 Goals Added mark.
