Defender Has Appeared in 112 MLS Matches Since 2015
SAN ANTONIO (June 22, 2022) – San Antonio FC has added defender Saad Abdul-Salaam for the 2022 season, pending league and federation approval. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed. Abdul-Salaam brings over 7,000 minutes of MLS experience to the team, appearing in 112 matches since 2015.
“We are pleased to welcome Saad to the team,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “He holds invaluable MLS and title-winning experience. On-field he is dominant in 1vs1 situations with astute game recognition. His skill set allows him to play anywhere along the backline in our game model, and is an all-around fit for our team identity.”
Abdul-Salaam last played for Columbus Crew in 2021, appearing in 18 matches and starting seven. For his career, Abdul-Salaam boasts a goal and 11 assists in 72 starts with Sporting Kansas City, New York City FC, Seattle Sounders FC, FC Cincinnati and Columbus.
The native of Charlotte, North Carolina has competed in CONCAFAC Champions League play as well, making his debut in the competition in 2016.
In 2015, Abdul-Salaam was in San Antonio with the San Antonio Scorpions of the NASL while on loan from Sporting Kansas City. With the signing, SAFC now has three players that were a part of Seattle’s 2019 MLS Cup squad, joining Justin Dhillon and Jordy Delem.
San Antonio FC is in Colorado on Friday, taking on Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC in a bout between the two top clubs in the USL Championship Western Conference. Kickoff is set for 8:00 p.m. CT, and will be broadcast on ESPN+.
