San Antonio FC (2-4-1) will host the Tacoma Defiance (2-6-0) at Toyota Field this Friday. The meeting is the first between the two clubs this season and it comes on ‘Noche de Celebracion’ night at Toyota Field presented by KENS 5; powered by 104.5 Latino Hits.
San Antonio is coming off a road loss to the Real Monarchs last Saturday. Despite taking a 2-0 lead in the first half, the Monarchs scored three second-half goals to earn the three points at home. Despite missing out on points, San Antonio continued to improve the team’s conversion rate, which has risen from 8.0% to 13.4% in just three matches. SAFC has won their last two matches at home as they prepare to host Tacoma this weekend.
The Defiance enter this week’s match on a three-match losing streak, including a 0-4 loss to the hands of Phoenix Rising FC last week. In those three losses, Tacoma was outscored 13-0. Despite the recent record, Tacoma boasts experienced players and highly-touted prospects on their roster, and the club has defeated Sacramento Republic and RGV FC this season.
Overall, SAFC is 4-1-1 all-time against Tacoma – who were originally named the Seattle Sounders 2 – and are 2-0-1 against the club at Toyota Field. The last time these two sides met in September of 2018, SAFC earned a 3-1 win thanks to goals from Ethan Bryant, Lance Laing and Maxi Rodriguez. Tacoma has conceded a league-high 23 goals this season, so San Antonio FC will be looking to add to that tally at home. In the club’s four home matches this season, SAFC has scored eight total goals including a 2-0 win over the LA Galaxy II in their last home match.
As part of ‘Noche de Celebracion’ night, the match will feature $1 beer and sodas courtesy of Bud Light, and special concessions, including chicken on a stick, turkey legs and corn in a cup. The night will conclude with an ‘Extra Time’ postgame party. SAFC players will also wear special edition Noche de Celebracion pregame tops which honor the iconic San Antonio Spurs retro tri-color uniforms. Replica tops can be purchased at the match, while signed, player-worn editions are currently up for auction.
