San Antonio FC (4-3-5) defeated Portland Timbers 2 (7-4-2) 2-1 at Toyota Field on Saturday night. Two goals in the last four minutes of the match earned SAFC three points at home in front of 7,244 fans.
“We want to thank the fans and our military for coming out in force tonight,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “They really inspire the players to keep going until the end. That’s something we appreciate and talk about all the time. It’s something we believe in and it’s great to see the players earn their reward tonight.”
Portland opened the scoring in the 50th minute with a penalty kick after defender Darnell King conceded a foul inside the box. Forward Augustine Williams converted from the spot to earn the 1-0 lead.
SAFC then equalized in the 86th minute when midfielder Omar Gordon received a pass at the top of the visitors’ box from King. The Jamaican turned inside and slotted the ball into the net with a low left-footed shot to level the score 1-1.
The goal marked Gordon’s third in as many USL matches and fourth in as many matches in all competitions. The Jamaica native has now scored four goals in USL play for the club overall since joining in August 2017. The assist also marked King’s fourth of 2018. The defender currently leads SAFC in assists this season, and is the only defender in franchise history to record four assists in a single campaign.
Forward Alex Bruce then earned the win for the club in stoppage time after collecting the ball with his back to the goal, turning, and finessing the ball low into the bottom corner of the net past goalkeeper Alex Mangels for the 2-1 lead. The goal marked the 19-year-old’s second of the season, and his first since his home debut on May 5 against Fresno FC.
San Antonio FC will return to action in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 6 as the team hosts FC Dallas at Toyota Field, marking the first time the Alamo City club has hosted an MLS opponent.
