San Antonio FC (3-3-5) will host the Portland Timbers 2 (7-3-2) at Toyota Field for the first time this season on Saturday, June 2 at 7:30 p.m. presented by Texas Lottery. The matchup marks the fourth game overall between the two clubs since the start of the 2016 season.
SAFC heads into the match after narrowly falling to Reno 1868 FC 1-2 last Saturday on the road. The game marked the first loss for SAFC in six USL matches and just the third loss for the club on the season so far. SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell stresses the importance of quickly moving on from a loss and focusing on the upcoming match – this one being against Portland this weekend.
“You focus on your basics on both sides of the ball,” said Powell. “We plan for playing Portland who are on a good run of form. You have to always look forward in this league. Every we game will be tight within the game and scoreline, so our job is to make sure we focus on the next match.”
SAFC will look to improve on their 2-0-1 overall record against Portland when the Timbers 2 visit Toyota Field. San Antonio defeated Portland on the road 4-0 in April of last season before earning a 2-1 win at home in October and securing a first home playoff match for the Alamo City club. Forward Cesar Elizondo has two goals to his name in matches against the Timbers as the Costa Rican enters Saturday looking for his first of the 2018 season.
Portland is enjoying an impressive turnaround from their 2017 campaign. After recording 23 losses and finishing last in the USL Western Conference last season, the Timbers 2 have come out of the gate firing on all cylinders in 2018, currently sitting in third place in the West on 23 points while scoring 22 goals and adding a league-leading seven clean sheets. San Antonio FC players like defender Greg Cochrane are expecting a stern challenge this Saturday.
“Portland is obviously a good team on a good run of form,” said Cochrane. “They are in second or third place in the league, so it’s a team we are going to have to be careful with defensively and hopefully we can exploit them when we have the ball offensively. It’s going to be a tough game, but one we are really looking forward to.”
Following the match with Portland, San Antonio will prepare to host MLS side FC Dallas in the fourth round of the U.S. Open Cup at Toyota Field on Wednesday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. SAFC advanced to the fourth round after defeating the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in penalty kicks on May 23.
