San Antonio FC today announced that Costa Rican forward Cesar Elizondo will return to the club for the 2017 USL season. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“We are pleased to have Cesar return to San Antonio FC,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell. “He came in midseason last year and gave us a lot of new energy, and we are looking for him to transfer that to a complete season together next year. We fully expect a quality player like Cesar to do so, and we look forward to starting preseason in February.”
After joining the club midseason in July, Elizondo appeared in nine USL matches, starting six and tallying a total of 574 minutes played. Overall, Elizondo scored two goals and recorded one assist during his time on the pitch. He also tallied 10 total shots and two shots on target. After appearing in seven straight matches after signing with the Alamo City club, Elizondo suffered an injury that kept him out until the final two matches of the season, where he helped SAFC continue their late-season playoff push.
Elizondo returned to San Antonio in July to sign with SAFC after most recently playing for Costa Rican first division side Pérez Zeledón during the 2015-16 season. The forward scored four goals in 18 appearances and 1404 total minutes with Zeledon year.
“I am proud to be able to continue with an organization as important as San Antonio FC,” said Elizondo. “I am very glad and motivated to give my all so we can accomplish great things with this great team and its wonderful fans. Our fans are like another member of the team – they are always with us in the good times, and they are also always supporting us in the not so good times. I can’t wait to get the group together and begin training with my teammates in 2017.”
The 28-year-old will continue his career in San Antonio where he spent two seasons with the now defunct San Antonio Scorpions from 2014-2015. Elizondo scored eight total goals for the Scorpions and helped lead the team to a championship in 2014 along with current SAFC midfielder Rafa Castillo.
Elizondo originally joined Costa Rican club Deportivo Saprissa where he made 28 appearances from 2008-13 before moving to the United States and joining the Carolina RailHawks (NASL) in 2013. Elizondo was traded to the Scorpions in the middle of the 2014 season. Overall, Elizondo scored 10 goals and recorded eight assists over 68 games in the NASL.
The Costa Rican international has also made 10 total appearances for his country’s national team, playing for the Ticos in Copa America matches, Copa Centroamericana matches and international friendlies. Elizondo also made four total appearances in CONCACAF Champions League play with Saprissa.
San Antonio FC is currently prepping for its second season in the USL, which is scheduled to kick-off in the Spring. Fans interested in season tickets can contact the SAFC sales office at 210-444-5MLS or visit www.sanantoniofc.com.
