San Antonio FC beat Tulsa Roughnecks FC 2-0 in front of 6,735 fans at Toyota Field on Saturday night in the team’s final home match of their inaugural campaign.
“First half, hats off to Tulsa, they made it very difficult for us,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “We’re just pleased that we got the three points, and now we head into the last week of the season with the opportunity to make the playoffs.”
SAFC forward Franck Tayou opened the scoring in the 49th minute when he found the end of a pass from Ryan Roushandel with a bicycle kick. The goal was Tayou’s fifth this season, tying Rafa Castillo for the team-lead this season. The assist was Roushandel’s first this season in his second appearance for the club.
The Alamo City club widened their lead in the 87th minute when forward Shawn Chin found the back of the net after a clever play by Carlos Alvarez in the box. The goal was Chin’s third this season, while Alvarez recorded his team-leading seventh assist.
Goalkeeper Matt Cardone tallied his fourth penalty save of the season in the 12th minute when he denied Sammy Ochoa from the spot en route to his fourth clean sheet. Cardone now leads the team in most clean sheets and most penalty saves.
“[Cardone] has been solid since he stepped in for us,” SAFC defender Ryan Roushandel said. “Having him back there is always nice. He’s a security blanket back there.”
San Antonio FC will now travel to Edinburg, Texas to face Rio Grande Valley FC in the last match of their inaugural season on Saturday, Sept. 24. SAFC is currently alive in the playoff race, and will aim to secure their spot in the Western Conference playoffs with a win against the Toros.
